Tips on PC Maintenance/Applications
| Maintenance | ||||
| To maintain your hard disk in tip-top condition, you need to service it regularly. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then click Scandisk. Use this to scan your drive(s). If the hard disk breaks down, all your programs and data will be lost; even cloning will not help at this stage. You have to get a new hard disk. Remember to scan your hard disk weekly or fortnightly. | ||||
| Compatibility | ||||
| After upgrading your operating system, you may find a program, e.g. a Chinese one, not working. So, when the operating system is upgraded, the program concerned needs to be upgraded too. | ||||
| Organizing your folders or directories | ||||
| For quick retrieval, backup and deletion of files, organize your folders or directories. Name your folders or directories according to the priority you accord to them by prefixing it with a number, e.g. 1persona, 1finance, 2travel. All these will automatically be placed on top of the list. If you are installing or downloading a new program which you are not certain if it is compatible to your system, create a folder or directory and name it with a prefix number, e.g. 2program or 3utility. Then install the program under the folder or directory. Uninstallation or deletion of a program will become easier with this method. | ||||

Alternative |

Another efficient way to organize your
folders is to partition your 'c' drive, i.e. divide the c drive
into two. The newly created drive will automatically be named
'd'. With two drives, you can place your programs and data as
follows:-

How? By Partioning of Drive |
||||
|
Partitioning can be done through the DOS or the Windows system; the former is quite complicated if you want to reverse the process. The latter is preferable as reversal to the original state or adjustment of free spaces can be easily done. To avoid any possible loss of data due to partioning, it is important that you back them up before you use the utility. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and then click Drivespace. If you cannot find it, go to Start, Find and then click Files or Folders. Type the word Drvspace and click Find Now. Click the word Drvspace (of Application type) twice to activitate it. When the dialog box appears, click c drive, then click Drive on the menu and then click Compress. Follow the instructions. Adjust the free space if you want to. It usually takes more than half an hour to complete the compression. The advantages of having two to three drives are better categorization of drives and folders; copying or transferring of files by drag and drop can be done easily; faster retrieval of files; and more storage space. Another advantage is that, in case the hard disk crashes, you could still save your data stored within the hard disk. The crash will cause whatever data stored in the c drive to be lost but not those stored in the d or e drive. To save the data, install the crashed hard disk as a slave drive and transfer the data to the new hard disk through the DOS system. You need to consult if you are not familiar with the installation.
