~!~!~Volunteering~!~!~

I got my first volunteer job when I was 12 years old, working for my local library. It began as a Girl Scout project; Girl Scouts expects its members to give service to their community. I enjoyed it so much, however, that I stayed...a whole year! I worked there from February 2001-April 2002, shelving books, reading shelves, and preparing program materials.

In March 2002 I applied for a volunteer job at Friends of the Family, a local organization that helps victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. I've been working there since April 2002, almost a year now. One night a week I provide child care so that clients with kids can attend classes, support groups and one-on-one counseling sessions. One afternoon a week I help in the front office, assisting visitors, delivering mail, and faxing paperwork, among other things.

Recently, I appeared in a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues, to help raise money and awareness to end violence against women. Visit VDay for more info on The Vagina Monologues.

I've also agreed to serve on my local library's newly formed Teen Advisory Board (TAB). We will be helping the library expand it's collection and provide new and interesting programs for teens.

Right now I'm thinking about applying for a short-term volunteer job in addition to my current one, possibly at an animal shelter or my local public transportation office.
