Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
I was playing Suikoden 3, my favorite RPG thus far (and that’s 18 years), and noticed something: Even though Chris is a main character – and female – our relationship lacks a certain depth.
Maybe it’s because her name is spelt “Chris” and not lengthened to something feminine. Maybe it’s because Hugo’s story hit me with more emotion, Geddoe’s with more intrigue and that left her story to hit me with the backstabbing and double-crossing of politicians. Maybe, just maybe, it is because hearing that a main character is female forced me to put impossible expectations on the game. Unfairly.

Did You Hear the One About ...
Really, I sit here right now wondering why Hollywood thinks it necessary to team up with ActiVision and create a game based off of the movie. This pertains to most any game of the movie genre, but this one really caught my (feminist side’s) eye.
The main characters are Blade and Doctor Grant. Blade being male (duh) and Doctor Grant being female. There we are off to a great start. A 50/50 ration. This is excluding all plot-only and secondary characters. If you delve too far there, you hit a wall. A painful, brick wall fashioned of testosterone and the repulsive scent of the undead. Or at least less than hygienic vampires and abominations that put White Wolf’s Nosferatu to shame.
