The three walked along the worn, rocky path, roughly toward the town of Neverwinter. They all continued silently, the sun beating harshly down on them. Angelic lead the way as Antirne and Flitz followed approximately ten feet behind her. The half-elf stopped, still looking down at the road. The other two slowed then stopped close behind, neither opening their mouths to speak.
"What..." Angelic began harshly, "What happened that night?" Antirne stood silently, stunned for a moment, then relaxing, looked gently over at the nearest tree. Flitz, feeling rather uncomfortable flew off into the forest, perhaps looking for a nice shady place to rest. Angelic turned to face her, sweat dripping off her brow. She wanted to know what had made Antirne so exhausted in the last few days. Each day they had traveled, Antirne would nearly collapse clear before the sun was even near sinking.
"There... there was a daemon," Angelic's eyes widened as she could only gasp in response, "There was a daemon, and it was going to devour you, but somehow... I knew that it wasn't going to."
Angelic raised an eyebrow, waiting quietly for her to continue. "It felt like it was going to..." Antirne paused for a moment, a gentle breeze suddenly picking up. She continued to watch the tree, its leaves fluttering gently. Angelic glanced from the elf and the tree -
- can it be? -
"It felt like it was going to hurt you, then take you away someplace." Antirne turned her gaze toward Angelic, suddenly taking a few quick steps toward her and placing her hands on the half-elf's shoulders. Their gazes locked uncomfortably,
"It was going to take you someplace and... and... make you theirs," she breathed, and as suddenly as she had boldly gazed at Angelic, the elf collapsed into the others arms.
"Antirne... Antirne!" Angelic shouted, giving the faint elf a quick shake. Her head bobbed slightly, as she lifted her head. "Sorry, I'm just a little tired," She breathed, rubbing at her eyes and yawning. Angelic kept her steady on her feet, concerned eyes softening for a moment. There was something about her, something she simply couldn't put a finger on. Look at yourself, her inner voice hissed, you look like you want to go out with her or something. Angelic frowned as she guided Antirne off the path and into sweet refreshing shade. And now all you need is a meal fit for a picnic, a bard, and perhaps even a few candles. Angelic paused for a moment, as Antirne yawned again, smiling up at her.
"I'm alright, I just need a few moments," Angelic turned away, blushing slightly.
"T-take your time," she stumbled. Holy Helm, what am I doing? Why am I being such an idiot? Angelic shook her head, then looked up toward the direction of the sun. It was about the third hour and they still had a long way to go. I still have a long way to go. Angelic sighed, wondering just why Antirne was with her. She had a reason to head toward a busy town, yet the elf was just a wanderer.
"Antirne," she said plainly looking down the path they were to travel.
"Hm?" she replied groggily.
"Perhaps... perhaps we should go our separate ways soon," Antirne sat up straighter, stunned by her comment. For a moment, her eyes glared at the paladin's back -
"We're both currently headed toward Neverwinter and I'm sure you'd rather avoid places bustling with people. So I think it's for the best."
It had been days since the evil had been even remotely near them. She had woken up that night, next to a pool of green putrid slime. It had reeked of evil, an evil that she had never felt before; simply seeing the pool made the hairs on the back of her neck stand straight. She had panicked for a moment, searching the camp for the others and finding both in separate trees. Something didn't feel right about the elf slumbering in the tree however. Angelic hadn't forgiven herself for falling asleep during her watch and Antirne never spoke another word about that night.
