"Part Twenty-Seven: Cold Yet Warm"
Naomi Hwang

The fairy continued to stuff her face with squirrel meat, as the Angelic stood uncomfortably embraced by the elf. She didn't really know what to do in a situation like this. A middle aged man flashed in her mind, as Antirne sobbed into her shirt. Her shoulder grew moist as time passed. Her armor sat near the campfire, it's fiery color reflecting off the cold steel. The last time someone was even near me like this -

Antirne tightened her embrace, sending flashes of pain up her side making the paladin grimace. Her wound had closed up, yet it still pulsed with pain from time to time. Angelic placed her callused hands on Antirne's shoulders, pushing her away from her embrace as gently as she could. With her hands still on her shoulders, Angelic sat her down on the cool grass then knelt down before her, her eyes meeting with Antirne's own puffy eyes. They're so teal; I've never realized just how dark they are. Angelic stood up uncomfortably with a cough. She turned away then stood for a moment. The air did seem different somehow, as if something that didn't belong there had -

- how could I be so oblivious to it?! -

"Don't worry about it," Angelic said aloud. Antirne stared up at the half-elf's back, a bit bewildered. There was an evil. None like any before it, yet somehow, it seemed familiar. The paladin seemed so different without her armor, she seemed so, so -

- normal. She seems so much smaller than she appeared -

Angelic half turned toward the elf. Her gaze was strong, as if trying to reassure her of their safety. The evil was strong, yet somehow, this young half-elf, this single girl, was willing to risk death to achieve victory.

"As long as I'm here, nothing will befall you," Angelic turned back toward the fire, shooting a quick glance back at Antirne, "You can count on that."

The air around them felt slightly lighter, yet the trees still swayed with emotion. Angelic sat back down near her armor and began polishing her blade, its weight reassuring the half-elf. Don't make me a liar Helm. Antirne stared back out into the forest, tears still running down her face, but much slower now. Both sat in silence as the fairy continued to shout and scream for attention.

The moon was full that night, the air cool, clammy and somehow still heavy from -

- Whatever the hell that is, Angelic thought as she stared up at the sky. She laid uncomfortably on the ground, her hands behind her head. The grass was a lot lumpier than she had thought, but at least her cloak took in most of the lumpiness. Antirne shifted slightly, still sniffling from her long teary night. Angelic sighed, sitting up slowly, stretching. Damn, I need a bath. She chuckled quietly at herself. She may battle like a man, but she hated smelling like one. Antirne stirred once more across the camp, noisily. Angelic stood up, straightening her clothing. She picked up her warm cloak and quietly walked over to the elf, placing the cloak on the elves shivering body. Angelic sighed, walking back over to where she was to sleep and shivered slightly. No wonder she was tossing and turning.

The night was deathly still. It continued to send chills down her spine. Angelic rubbed at her arm, still stiff from the grip of the wolves overpowering jaws -

- ...you are nothing in anyone’s eyes! - Angelic sat stone faced as the elves airy voice suddenly filled her mind. She shifted her legs and laid back down on the cold grass. Her eyes were shut tight, but that single dream, that memory continued to play in her mind. She placed a hand on her cheek, feeling the scar across her face. She felt a anger well up insider her - no, a hatred, she thought to her self, opening her eyes to the night sky.

"Helm, help me," she mouthed, no voice left her lips as a tear trickled down her unscarred cheek, "I don't want to hate him, I don't want to hate anyone. Guide me once more, for I am losing my way." A warm, gentle breeze caressed her body, yet no warming voice filled the air. Why are these memories coming back now?

Then as suddenly as she had blinked, her body fell deep into the night.
