Lycanthrope

These are the legends as handed down by the Ancestors.

Once, long ago, in a time now only whispered of in the darkest of nights and the dustiest of tomes, there arose a great evil that walked the realms. All races fell before this evil, for its onslaught was unimaginalbe even by todays standards.

Those who fell first to this evil were the Ogres. Their once wondrous civilization, seen now in ruins atop the highest mountains, was known for its artwork and poetry. They attempted to battle the evil, yet it was no use as each attempt failed to find a weakness. It is unknown how the evil destroyed the Ogre civilization as no mention of this was told to Elven, nor human, historians.

Over time, each race fell to this evil with swift and brutal consequences. Pixies, was the size of an Ogre, dwindled down till they are now barely taller than a human's knee; a short human at that. The Elven race lost their ability to sleep and dream as the other races, yet they somehow persevered. Of the other races, nothing much is known to either myself or my people as they remain reticent to disclose what occured.

It is during this time that a new disease spread about the realms. This disease, or gift depending upon who you talked to, caused those inflicted with it to shift their shapes into animals. Most of those inflicted transformed into werewolves, which is how the term "werewolf" came into being. Though able to transform at will, most kept to a lunar schedule, only transforming with the rising of the full moon and the days prior and after this occurence.

Legends passed down within the Halfling burrows, tell of a time when the first werewolf walked the realm. It is unclear what race he or she was as most accounts of this being are garbled from the passage of time. However, it is known that the being pledged itself to destroying the evil that walked the realms...And this being destroyed said evil at the cost of its own life.

Today, most werewolves choose to spend their lives as they see fit. Both good and evil, to them it's just life.
