"Herein contains the tale of a young lady and her quest to gather the seven Constellations of Suzaku together.
Fushigi Yugi is about a junior high school girl named Miaka whom accidently goes into the forbidden room of the library and finds a mysterious book called, "The Universe of the Four Gods." Her friend, Yui, reads with her the beginning and thus, they both got sucked into the book. When the two come back to the real world, they try to ignore it and make up the excuse that they both were imagining things.
Later, when Miaka has a fight with her mother, she runs away to the library and goes into the same room to read further on inside that book. In astonishment, she finds that the book's next pages were talking about her and the handsome man that had saved the two. The next moment, Miaka gets sucked into the book and becomes the Priestess of Suzaku.
There is a legend in the book world claiming that a girl from another world will arrive to a country's aid and summon their God, obtaining its power to defeat the enemy and be granted three wishes. Miaka goes out to collect all seven celestial constellations that are needed to summon Suzaku but along the way, finds out that her friend, Yui, too was sucked into the book and became her enemy. Yui had been "raped" and saved by a Seiryu warrior named Nakago whom lead Yui to think that Miaka was her enemy. Yui and Miaka both have feelings for one man, Tamahome.
There are many conflicts in love and between friendship in the quest to summoning the Gods and at the same time, Miaka and Tamahome are trying to live a life together. Unfortunately, Tamahome is only a character from a book and thus, cannot live with Miaka in the book world nor the real world. That is, sadly, the only wish that the Gods cannot grant: For one being to live in another world.
Miaka Yuki is a cheery, active, hilarious, and high spirited young girl whose studying for her exams to attend Yotsubadai High School. She loves food and has great determination, even though she is a cluts. She respects and looks up to her best friend Yui who seemed to give her confidence at times. She falls in love with Tamahome but has problems when she found out that Yui too loves him. Sou Kishuku aka Tamahome is a handsome devil of a martial artist. His powers are his natural abilities, fighting, and his chi raises when he's determined to protect and save the people he loves, especially Miaka. He is money crazy and he tries to support his poor family. Miaka seems to be the only girl and the first whom he loved and cared about more then money. Saihitei aka Hotohori is the Emperor of Konan. Ever since childhood, he's always been looking forward to meeting the Priestess of Suzaku, even falling in love with her and hoping she would love him back. Once Miaka appears, it was love at first sight and he was determined to have her love back. Until he realized she loved Tamahome, he tried to stand back and let their relationship bond but he still, cannot forget his love for her. Kourin aka Nuriko is both beautiful and handsome, just gorgeous in any ways. He is naturally a guy but crossdresses as a girl because of his dead sister. His powers is super-human strength and his only love was Emperor Hotohori. He is very active and tries to keep everyone's spirits high when bad times have arrived. He knows that to cheer Miaka up, is to bring lots and lots of food. Chichiri is a cute and hilarious monk. He knows a bit of magic himself whom was taught by Tai Yi-Jun. Chichiri wears a fake, smiling mask to cover his wounded eye that he got from his terrible past. Chichiri loves to fish and is quiet most of the time but does speak to warn those around him or to tell them what they need to know. Kou Shunu/Genro aka Tasuki is a bandit and "hates" women. He is a red-head who owns a Harrison, a fan that brings flames in one flap and is very competitive, also stubborn. He didn't meet Tamahome at the best time since his first impression was of Tamahome nearly killing him. From then on, Tasuki still hits Tamahome but they become closer like brothers. Myojuan aka Mitsukake is a gentle and kind person with the power to heal. His only love died right before he came back with her medicine for her illness, he couldn't save her. Now that her soul has finally gone to rest, he joins the Suzaku Seven to help Miaka since she helped him. Ou Doukun aka Chiriko came later in the episodes when he was thought to have been another person. He is a very intelligent child with the power of knowledge, very helpful. He warns and tells the Suzaku Seven of the monsters and problems up ahead. Yui Hongo was and still is Miaka's best friend. After she got "raped", she fell into the hands of Nakago and told her that she was the Priestess of Seiryu and that Miaka was her enemy since she did not come to her aid when she needed her the most and ran off to Tamahome. Yui still loves Miaka deep down but covers it with anger and made it her goal to get ahead of Miaka and summon Seiryu to make her pay. Nakago seems like a very evil person and is very strong. His past is very sad and turns him into the villainous person he is now. He made it his goal to help Yui and pretend he loved her until she summoned Seiryu and grant him a wish of immortality. He is the one that makes up most of the plans of travel and attack, it's as though he is the leader instead of Yui.
Amiboshi is Suboshi's twin brother, the nicer and kind-hearted one. His powers is making deadly melodies out of his flute or using them for good and raising hopes. When he fell into a flood and was thought to be dead, he was taken in by parents who lost their son and made him their son named Huaike. He lost his memories later on and now believes that he is Huaike reborn. Soi is a seductive Seiryu warrior who has the power of lightning and is in love with Nakago. She does everything to aid him and has been loyal to him till the end. Even though Nakago does not feel the same for her back, he realizes just how strong her love is when she takes a sword's stab that was meant for him. Tomo has the power of creating Illusions. He was first introduced as the person who would rape Miaka if Nakago had failed. He too, failed. He has "artistic" colorings around his face and every movement he makes could be an illusion but still, very painful. Without all that makeup, he's a looker. Ashitare is a half wolf, half human, almost like a werewolf. He used to work at a circus like some kind of dog until Nakago came and took him out of the cage. He still is bossed around like a dog and gets killed in the end. He is able to return to a wolf form if his human-like form is killed. Miboshi has the power to levitate, summon demons, and to posess into another host. Although he is small, he is still capable of strong black magic. He is said to have lost his body long ago and is stable in living so long through other hosts.

Suboshi is the twin brother of Amiboshi. He is very close to his brother and is the more less-pitying person. He falls in love with Yui after she comforted him when he thought his brother was dead. He made it his goal to always protect, love, and be there for Yui, even though she does not feel the same for him.
