"Pai wants to become human..."
Yakumo Fujii is a 16-year-old Japanese high school student whose father disappeared in Tibet four years ago while searching for a legendary race of three-eyed beings. One day, while being in a rush to be late for his work as a gay waitress, Yakumo runs into a girl. Her name was Pai. As soon as Pai found out the boy's name was Yakumo, she gave him a letter that Yakumo's father wrote just before he died, the note claimed that Pai was the last of the Sanjiyan race he had spent his life searching for, a race with the power of eternal youth and immortality.
Yakumo was about to turn down his father's begging through the piece of paper until a huge bird appeared and rampaged through the streets of Shinjuku. Pai claimed the monster was Takuhi, her pet that lived inside her walking stick. Suddenly Takuhi flies straight at Pai and was about to kill her until Yakumo pushed her out of the way and fell into its talon's path. Before Yakumo blacked out, he saw a shining light coming from Pai's forehead where...a third eye was located.
Yakumo then learned that he had become Pai's wu which was like a bodyguard except it can only die if its hostess that emerged with it or their Sanjiyan dies. His body would simply regenerate itself when limbs were torn and he'd be nearly invincible. The main reason why Pai merged with his soul to make him her wu was to be protected by those who desired her and her power of immortality. Also to help along their quest of mortality by finding the Ningen no Zou. Along the journey, however, Yakumo slowly develops a likings towards Pai...
Pai. The last of the Sanjiyan race. She is a cheery female whom always has her hopes up in bad situations and cheers up those around her. She cares very much for Yakumo and the others whom she calls, a "gang".
Pai's two sided other whom Yakumo calls, Sanjiyan (3 eyes/Triclops). She is the one who seems to be the stronger willed and more powerful side with the magic. She protects Yakumo until he is further trained to become a better Wu. Yakumo Fuji is the son of Professor Fuji whom found Pai when he was ill. His father left a message to Pai four years before she found him, begging his son to help Pai along her journey to turn her into human, becoming mortal. In the process of saving Pai's life, he nearly gets killed but Pai turns him into her wu (voice/without/nothingness) as she emerged his soul with her's.
Takuhi (man bird) is Pai's friend who lives inside her staff. It may become fierce and rampage a whole city if scared like a regular wild animal. Takuhi can change its size and fly around, being a spy to Pai. The Ningen no Zou (Statue of Humanity) is the great statue that Yakumo and Pai are after. It is believed to have the power to change Pai into a human. The Great Kaiyanwang (Demon Eye King) was Pai's former fiancee. Now he turned into a ruthless legend by evil monsters who seek to revive him from wherever he is and in return, they believe he'll grant them immortality. His wu still lives, meaning, Kaiyanwang is still alive. He will become his fiancees rival in a great battle of good against evil.
Benares is Kaiyanwang's 320 year old wu whose trained and learned a great deal of sorcery through out the years. He happens to be a lot stronger than Yakumo, even though it is unfair to compare a beginner to a pro.
