House Committee Update

Dear Fellow Members

During the past year the House Committee, Finance Committee and the Board of Directors have been working to lower food costs in the house. Over the past three months, since Charles has assumed both the House Manager and Chef duties, our goals of 37.5% food costs, 25% bar costs and 55% labor costs are being met, on the average, for three months. I would like to thank Charles and Robin Mumford for their personal commitment toward achieving these goals. Because of their efforts thousands of dollars have been saved, which will go toward other Country Club expenses. So if you see Charles or Robin, let them know we appreciate their efforts.

Bob Hansen

House Chairman

Superintendents Report

Scot Anderson

Hurricane Isabel could have been much worse. In all, the storm brought down 31 trees at Sussex Pines. The majority of the trees (27) were "Bradford Pears." The cleaning up of debris will run into the fall months as we clean the wooded areas annually.

I would like to thank the following members for donating their personal time on the day following the storm to help the maintenance staff clean-up the majority of the trees and debris:Pete Sheldon, Jack McCarthy, Joe Hall, John Pederson, Joe Fluharty and his Grandson, Jim McCeney, Sam DeBoer, Ted Hagy, Jack Hilbeck and Jim Mitchell. On behalf of the entire maintenance staff and the general membership your time and hard work was greatly appreciated.

See You On the Course,

Scot

First and foremost, a big thank you to all of you who come out and support the clubhouse on a regular basis. I hope you will continue to come in for drinks, food and fun as the days grow shorter and colder.
Secondly, I would like to ask our membership to come in for dinner before the end of the month. We serve dinner every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night. It would seem that many people wait until the end of the month and realize they have not met their minimum, then we get flooded with business and get complaints about poor service and meal times. Robin and I have increased staffing at the end of the month significantly, which has made some improvement, yet the ultimate solution for the month end blitz, would be for you, our Members, to come in the beginning or middle of the month.

I would like to report that for the month of August, we beat our budget by $12,000. We are making fiscally sound decisions regarding our food, labor and other operating costs, and they have begun to pay off. I would like to thank all the staff here, as everyone has had their work load increased significantly in the past months. Every member of the staff has done a fantastic job filling in the holes when we reduced our staff. I would especially like to thank Ed Reynolds and Robin Mumford; without them, none of the improvements we have made would have been possible. They do an incredible job and deserve our thanks and support.

Thank You and Happy Dining,

Charles D. Dolson IV.

LADIES' 18-HOLE GOLF

Our two day Member/Member was held September 2nd and 9th. The weather cooperated on both days(surprise, surprise). We had a three-way tie for first place and those winners were Janet Griffith, Gloria Romano, Delores Springer, Flo Smith, Sheila Hilbeck and Phyllis Green. In second place were Bea Hilbeck and Kitty Bloxom:Third place was shared by Marie Willin, Kathryn Gordy, Kay Gremminger and Barb McCeney. This format is lots of fun and thanks go out to Kay Gremminger and Janet Griffith for arranging this event. The Senior/Super Senior was held the end of September and the results will be reported in next month's newsletter.

Thanks to the hard work of a lot of people, the couple's tournament was held as scheduled. I would like to thank the Gremmingers and Hilbecks for a very well organized and fun filled two days. We especially thank Scot and his crew and some member volunteers who worked to clean up the golf course in the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel so we could play on Saturday and Sunday. Also, thanks to Charles,Robin and the staff for a delicious dinner following the tournament. Tim made sure we had every advantage due to course conditions. Thanks to Tim and Chris for organizing and supporting our two fun days on the golf course. We had three flights with eight winners in each flight. Congratulations to all winners and special congratulations to Phyllis and John Green who were the overall winners.

It's hard to believe that we are entering our last official golfing month. We have some exciting events scheduled. Sussex Pines is hosting an invitational on October 7th. The following week, the ladies and MISGA will play in their annual fun day. On October 28th, we will have a scramble and our closing luncheon. I hope each of you will be able to join in the festivities as we officially end our 2003 season.
