*Review on airsoft weapon

For more information on airsoft and its related material(s); please feel free to visit Arnies Airsoft.  They have an extensive list of forums and reviews that will satisfy ANY player whether you are just beginning or are a hard core veteran.

M-249

This page is for the pictures and descriptions of the weapons we use, have used, or only wish we could use.  First described is the general airsoft description of the type of gun, followed by the actual use/ description of the real weapon each gun was modeled after.

What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a type of air powered gun that fires 6 mm plastic BB's (between 0.12 and 0.25 grams) between 120 and 500 fps, depending on what type of gun it is and how upgraded the internal components are.  The BB's do not usually penetrate skin, break glass, or really hurt too bad.  With proper eye protection and engagement limits, there is virtually no way to be seriously injured with an airsoft gun.  Airsoft guns come in a variety of styles, using either AA batteries, hand-powered spring, green/red gas, or rechargeable batteries for power.  They can range from fair detail to being so realistic that trained military personnel have difficulty believing they are replicas.

Electric Minis

Mini's were our first contact with airsoft, and were great starters.  They use 4 AA batteries and hold up to 70-80 bb's (depending on who you ask).  They have a very low muzzle velocity (+/- 120 fps) and do not shoot very far, but they are fully automatic, making them great for rushes and mass assaults at very close ranges.  They are generally 1/3rd scale replica and have fair detail.  They are among the cheapest for of airsoft one can buy, but very fun within its own level of play.

MP5 A5

The preferred submachine gun of counter-terrorist operatives around the world, Heckler & Koch's MP5 is known for its reliability and accuracy, even when firing on full automatic.  It can be fitted with single, triple, and full-auto trigger group (1).  The 9mm bullets have a 1312ft/s muzzle velocity (2).

~Top~

M16-A1

The Colt M16A2 (A1 pictured) is used for its extra range and firepower compared to submachine guns.  Its 5.56 caliber easily pierces Level II body armor and has the longest range of most military's standard issued weapons.  It comes standard with a single and three round trigger group (1).

Steyer Aug

The standard weapon of the Austrian Army, the Steyer Aug is a futuristic looking assault rifle with a compact bullpup design.  It is well suited for missions requiring the maneuverability of a submachine gun combined with the punch of an assault rifle (1).  This Austrian rifle uses 5.56mm NATO rounds at 2900ft/s (2).

~Top~

AK-47

This Russian rifle shoots 7.62mm NATO rounds 2329ft/s (2).

Mavrick's review -- "This was my first gun, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.  The first thing that you should notice is bb reservoir opening.  The reason for this...it was the very first thing to break off in my possession of the gun.  I play with a rather rough style so guns need to hold up for me.  I can tell you I was the first person in the group to have firing problems.  I had taken the gun apart multiple times and found that the compression chamber had cracked.  If this breaks, the gun is useless.  My overall opinion for this gun - I would definitely recommend this gun to those who wish to start small with airsoft and who have a relatively soft playing style.  Those who like to play aggressive and drop their guns a lot, the AK may not meet your requirements.        Another great note....Despite my other teammate's guns, I was able to make a cheap, yet effective hopper.  I could hold a good 300 rounds a game by cutting the tip of a contact lens cleaner solution bottle and hollowing out the tube inside.  It was inverted, so it was a great way to have lots  of ammo for those CQB skirmishes."

Uzi

This Israeli submachine gun uses 9mm rounds.

Spring Rifles/Pistols

Spring guns, including spring pistols, are full-sized replicas with excellent detail.  Generally, the slides move according to the real model, and the magazines hold about the same number of rounds.  They shoot farther and harder than the minis, but their main drawback is the need to cock the spring by hand between each shot.  This saves on batteries, but make mass-assaults very difficult, especially without decent cover.  They may come in cheap plastic form or more expensive metal, heavy-weight form.  If only the tips weren't orange, these would be excellent low-budget movie-quality props.

MP5 SD3

Terrorists throughout the world fear Heckler & Koch's MP5SD.  Its integral silencer is so effective that the report of the bullet is miniscule compared to the click of the bolt operating (1).  The 9mm bullets fire at 1312ft/s (2).

M16 A2

The Colt M16A2 is used for its extra range and firepower compared to submachine guns.  Its 5.56 caliber easily pierces Level II body armor and has the longest range of most military's standard issued weapons.  It comes standard with a single and three round trigger group (1).

XM177 HW

Navy Socom weapon of choice.  5.56mm NATO rounds fire at 2900ft/s (2)

Link's review  -- "This was a nice spring gun for its purpose.  Whoever made it wasn't incredibly worried with durability: the first night I had it I wound up jamming a bb in the barrel, and without a de-jammer rod, I was forced to take it all apart.  *NOTE* The front assembly comes off independently of the rest of the weapon, so if that's what's broke, stop there!  The accuracy is certainly better than a mini, but it really compares to the spring pistol, maybe just a touch better.  Of course, if I didn't take it apart right off the bat and given the barrel some wobble maybe it would be better.  Still, I bought the scope separate but simultaneously with the gun.  It looks cool, but the sights really are good already, so don't get a scope unless you just like to look at/ through them.  It was mostly plastic, too, except for the metal weights in the handle, back, and the metal flash suppressor.  A little weakly built, but it's marked a few hits."

AR-15

A compact version of the M16, the M4 Carbine (similar to the XM177 and the AR15) is commonly used when the firepower of an assault rifle is needed, but the weight and size is not.  It comes standard with a single and full auto trigger group (1).  5.56mm NATO rounds are used.

SPAS-12

The SPAS-12 is a fully automatic combat shotgun capable of emptying its clip in 2.25s.  This makes it ideal for quickly clearing a room of all hostiles (1).

Mavrick's review  -- "I was pretty excited to get this gun...I had wanted a new type of spring weapon in an affordable range.  The Tokyo Marui was far too expensive so I decided to go with this weapon.  After receiving the gun, I was impressed with the weight.  It seemed to weigh a considerable amount more than guns that we normally played with.  However, I was concerned about its stability.  The first thing I noticed was its method of fire.  The gun operates in 3 modes.  1 shot, 2 shot, and 3 shot.  Each shot selected by pumping the gun another time.  With single shot, the accuracy was mediocre, however, in multiple shot, the gun did not perform well at all.  The first problem I had with this gun was in a CQB game.  A confrontation with another player led to a broken plastic barrel.  This proved stability was very low.  Shortly after the barrel incident, the gun ceased to fire.   Overall, I would recommend this gun to a beginner because the price of roughly $50 shipped cannot be beaten compared with its quality.  If you have a bigger wallet and are looking for something a little more sturdy and added realism, I recommend you go with the Tokyo Marui version.  A slightly higher price of $80 boasts better results."

Super-9

7.62 NATO rounds give this bolt action sniper rifle high power and high accuracy.

G3A3

The G3A3 is Heckler & Koch's standard assault rifle.  It fires the powerful 7.62mm NATO round.  This is an even more accurate assault rifle than the M16 (1).

~Top~

L85 A1

The Enfield L85A1 (also known as the Enfield Individual Weapon or SA80) is the standard infantry weapon of the British Army.  Its bullpup design trades accuracy for maneuverability (1).

M92

The Beretta Model 92FS 9mm has a low recoil and a large magazine, a primary advantage over the bulkier .45 (1).

Bear's review  -- "Well, it all began with the M92. This spring pistol was a great gun, and offered much more range than our previous minis. I Found this weapon to be wonderful for the job it was made for, a starter weapon. I still use it quite frequently, because it is very accurate, and when not overfilled, BB-s hardly jam it. Making it very dependable and I would recommend to all starters in the sport."

Desert Eagle HW

The Desert Eagle is a bad ass gun.

Mavrick's Review -- Along with purchasing the mini AEG AK-47, I also ordered this gun.  The weight and feel of the gun is really comforting.  By no means does it weigh near what a real Desert Eagle weighs, but it still feels really good.  The performance on this gun is great! The rest of my group had the M92's and we found that my eagle was more powerful.  Hence it is described as a bad ass gun.  If you are not in the price range of a gas gun, I'd definitely recommend this gun.

Gas Handguns

Gas Handguns are full-sized replica guns that are even more realistic than the spring powered versions.  They require, instead of batteries, a compressed  gas (such as green gas see picture on right) that is loaded into the clip with the bb's.  They come in a non-blowback (NBB) style, and in a blowback (GBB) style, in which the slide "blows back" on each shot, making it look and feel extremely realistic, minus the shell flying out the side.  On metal versions, the weight is usually near the actual weight of the real weapons.  Plastic models are of course lighter to carry, but during an all day event the lightened load is not bad.

M9

The Beretta Model 92FS 9mm has a low recoil and a large magazine, a primary advantage over the bulkier .45 (1).

Hawkins' Review -  "When i received this gun, i about crapped my pants. It felt so real and functioned so life-like. I loaded it up and fired it at my neighbors house which is quite a distance. To my surprise, it actually hit. This gun was awesome. I loved the look, the feel and how it worked. However later when i had the gun, it functioned incorrectly. During the winter, the gun never functioned correctly, firing one or two shots, then leaking gas. I was informed this was supposed to happen due to the effects of the cold on the gas. However it continued through the summer, even through proper lube and maintnance. I recommend this gun for anyone however, just make sure you lube it before and after every use. Also, make sure to store it in the winter rather than use it. That is the only downfall, no winter use."

M93R

The Beretta M93R features select fire for single, 3-round burst and full auto fire. Metal foregrip folds down so you can take stabilize the gun during 3-round burst and full auto fire. (5.)

Link's Review - "I have two words for this weapon: Burst Fire.  I was sold on that phrase, and I am glad it was so.  This pistol, in single fire mode, is exceedingly accurate.  On burst fire and full auto, it burns through the green gas, but still ROCKS!  In fact, it makes a great primary, especially for people who don't own their own gun and need to borrow one of mine.  Throw on the 50-rd clip and you got yourself a gun that will rock-and-roll.  One day I hope to upgrade the plastic slide to metal, but I don't use it enough to justify the upgrade.  If you plan on using it a lot, go metal."

Glock 18C

One of the numerous models of the Glock, the 18C is semi- or fully-automatic with 9mm bullets.

Smyth's Review: "This sidearm was one of the big jumps in technology that I had at the time. The KSC Glock 18C is a wonderful sidearm to have with you at all times. The 18C is a full metal gun design, it features two fire modes, Semi and Full Auto with the thumb selector switch. Quite accurate with a small, compact design. Other than the fact that GBB guns hardly/don't work with cold weather, it is a very reliable sidearm to have with you. I would highly suggest the Glock 18C."

Desert Eagle .50

The .50 Desert Eagle is a very powerful handgun.  It is capable of punching through body armor, but has a limited seven round magazine (1).

Link's review  -- "The main reason I got this gun was for a terrorist to use in a movie, but I was certainly hoping to get some good use out of it in games as well.  As it turns out, it was too big for my leg holster and after a while, the slide didn't want to return after the blowback, getting caught on the next bb.  There are holsters available for the Desert Eagle, but be cautious of any 'universal holster' that is said to fit any large-frame handgun.  They may still be too small.  I fixed the problem with the slide very easily, if not very late.  The silicon lubrication in the green gas, along with my own bottle specifically for gas guns, seemed to do a better job of making the slide stick than operate smoothly.  The metal parts of the gun still need lubed, but the slide where plastic meets plastic need to be cleaned completely of all silicon after each use to ensure smooth operation.  It still fires to this day."

MAC 11

Similar to the Israeli Uzi, the Mac 11 will blow through 50 rounds in a few seconds, leaving plenty of 9mm holes in anything in its path.

Automatic Electric Guns

AEG's are battery operated full-sized rifles/ submachine guns that are as real as one can get.  The battery packs are usually sold separately, and nearly all the internal parts can be upgraded to make the weapon more powerful, accurate, and consistent.  AEGs come in nearly every variety of modern or historic rifle and submachine gun, including nearly every MP5 version known to H&K.

External upgrades are also very popular with AEGs.  M203 grenade launchers (or similar types) are available in bb form, using compressed gas in a stationary shell holding between 60 and 165 bbs.  They can be attached to M16's and their hybrids, along with many other AEGs with RIS type mounting capabilities.  AEG's also have a greater need for a high capacity magazine, which may hold from 200 to 550 rounds, depending on the type and make of magazine.  Low (10-30 rounds), standard (50-70 rounds), and mid-capacity (100-130 rounds) magazines are also available for AEGs and are spring-loaded, making them much quieter than the reseroir bb's in the hi-capacity mags.

The high price of AEGs represents the high quality and "kick-assity" of these weapons.  The professional models made by Systema, ranging from $900 to $2000 per weapon are used by the military and police for training and are truly exact replicas, requiring 'real-steel' accessories.

P90

This sub-machine gun has a horizontal loading magazine located on the top of the weapon, enhancing the already compact design.

MP5 A4

The preferred submachine gun of counter-terrorist opertives around the world, Heckler & Koch's MP5 is known for its reliability and accuracy, even when firing on full automatic.  The 9mm MP5A4 is fitted with single, triple, and full-auto trigger group (1).

~Top~

MP5 SD5

Terrorists throughout the world fear Heckler & Koch's MP5SD.  Its integral silencer is so effective that the report of the bullet is miniscule compared to the click of the bolt operating (1).  The 9mm bullets fire at 1312ft/s (2).

The Airsoft Elite version of the MP5SD5 uses a full metal body w/ a hard plastic grip.  It is fully     upgraded and includes the Systema M120 spring capable of powering its projectiles to a 420fps.  It houses a full metal reinforced Systema and ICS gearbox with a custom AE spring guide.  Powered by the EG200 motor, this airsoft gun boasts a good 800-900 rounds per minute w/ a 400+fps velocity.  This gun is a great way to enter the world of AEG  (4).

M4 Carbine

A compact version of the M16, the M4 Carbine is commonly used when the firepower of an assault rifle is needed, but the weight and size is not.  It is commonly used by US and Israeli special forces.  It comes standard with a single and full auto trigger group (1).

M4 RIS

This model is a heavily modified M4, with a Rail Integration System (RIS) and tactical fore grip, tac-light, AN/PEQ II laser sight/battery pack, and scope (in place of standard handle).

Präzisions Schützen Gewehr - 1

Unmatched in length, the PSG-1 will turn heads and will definitely make your enemies afraid.  The PSG-1 comes with its standard capacity 15 round magazine but is also compatible with the 7.62 mm G3 magazines as well.

Smyth's Review: "This weapon was the official move for me into the sniper class world. The Tokyo Marui PSG-1 is a phenomenal rifle. The gun itself is on a 1-to-1 scale of the real gun size and features but only 2/3rds of the true weight. It comes with a scope from the manufacture on it made by Tasco. The gun, with a full metal design, is highly accurate. The PSG-1 fires a far distance and is actually really quiet for the distance the bb goes from the gun. I would highly recommend this gun if you were looking to move into the sniper world. The only downfall to this gun is that it's quite bad at close range combat. I would highly recommend a very reliable sidearm with the use of this gun."

~Top~

M249

Fully automatic, firing 7.62mm rounds, this weapon will tear through just about anything that can move of its own free will.  The replaceable barrel (hence the handle on top) is necessary in the field when the barrel gets too hot and begins to melt.
~Top~

M134

The M134 Vulcan cannon (Gatling Gun) has six barrels that rotate with each shot to keep the barrels from melting.  Whether mounted to a jeep, a helicopter, or jet, or carrying it around like Jesse Ventura on Predator, this weapon will tear through people, jungle, cars, you name it.
