Thomas Joseph CULLEY (54835, Corporal)

b. 1889, Bath  d. Wed. 13th Sep. 1916 (aged 27)

Nine months after his brother’s death, Tom also died, although a lot further away from France.  He was stationed in India serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps and on this date was sent on an errand but never returned.  He is remembered on the Kirkee War Memorial in Poona, India as his body was never found.

On 15th May 1921, five years after her sons’ deaths, Mrs Annie Culley officially unveiled the town’s war memorial in honour of all those who fell in the Great War for Civilisation.  This was probably very little consolation for her for the loss of her two sons, but it is a lasting mark of respect that she was particularly chosen out of all the bereaved families in Filey.
