The Fiesta Bowl is a United States college football game played each year since its inception in 1971 in Tempe, Arizona . The Bowl is sponsored by Tostitos tortilla chips (a Frito-Lay product). The Fiesta Bowl first game was played in 1971. Since then the Bowl has produced funds of more than $1 billion to the state's economy, paid more than $282 million to universities and colleges and has hosted five national championship games. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) approved the application forwarded Arizona Sports Foundation for an Arizona-based bowl game at the annual NCAA meetings held in Houston . In 1975 the Fiesta Bowl Featured Arizona State and Nebraska , posting records of 11-0 and 10-1 as the best overall regular season record of any non-New Year's Day game. The Sun Devils made to an exciting victory with 17-14 and finished at the second position in the final national polls. The Fiesta Bowl has come up a long way throughout its history posting many records. In the year 2001 the Fiesta Bowl became a part of the Championship Series. Since then, every four years it is the designee for the national championship game. On December 8, 2002 , Ray Mills of Phoenix nailed a hole-in-one and won $1 million in the AT&T Fiesta Bowl Million Dollar Hole-in-One presented by Ernst & Young. This was for the first time in history of the big event that a person was able to record an ace and win the cash prize. Mills had used a seven-iron on the 158-yeard hole and made the ball bounce on the front of the green before it rolled in the hole. In 2003, the Bowl featured one of the greatest games in the college football history. Ohio State played against the defending national champion Miami Hurricanes in a double-overtime instant classic. The Miami Hurricanes were defeated and Ohio State won the school's fifth consensus national championship. It was the 32 nd Annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl produced a financial support of $228 million to the state's economy. The national championship game between Ohio State and Miami touched a record $153.7 million and attracted 90,094 out-of-state visitors to the Valley of the Sun. The game is planned to be moved to the Arizona Cardinals new stadium in Glendale , Arizona in 2007.
