Hello my name is Denise Uwa. I am currently a graduate student at Molloy College pursuing a degree in Nursing Administration and Informatics. During my clinical experience at Winthrop University Hospital I became interested in the smoking cessation campaign. On my web page I will be discussing the smoking cessation campaign, how important it is to stop smoking, the benefits of not smoking. I also intend to provide links for further information. Smoking Cessation in simple terms is to quit smoking. At Winthrop Hospital after the cigarettte smokers were identified from their admission assessment information, a counselor would meet with that patient to provide any necessary information regarding smoking cessation. Support groups information would be given at this time. Reasons to stop smoking According to the Surgeon General's Report, the health benefits of Smoking Cessation, eliminating smoking can greatly reduce the occurrence of coronary heart disease and other forms of cardiovascular disease. The report also states that quiting smoking reduces the risk of repeat heart attacks and death from heart disease by 50 percent or more. Smoking cessation is important in the medical management of many contributors to heart attack. These include atherosclerosis (fatty buildups in arteries), thrombosis (blood clots), coronary artery spasm and cardiac arrhythmia (heart rhythm problems). Quitting smoking also can help manage several other disorders, especially arteriosclerotic peripheral vascular disease (fatty buildups in peripheral arteries) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. |
