History of the
Murray Grey
The Murray Grey
originated next to the Murray River in Australia. A small breeder bred a black Angus bull to a
Milking Shorthorn cow and a grey calf hit the ground in 9 months.
The breed itself isn't very well known, but it is making an impact on the
beef industry as we know it today. The cattle isn't only doing well
on the market, but is giving all types of cattle a run for their money in
the show ring too. |
History on us
We live in a small
town in Prairie du Rocher, IL and love to show cattle. We own our own herd
of cattle that we breed, care for, show and sell. Currently we also
own a unregistered herd of cattle that we are in partnership with our
father. We have about 40 head of unregistered Murray's. As far as showing, we aren't "big" into showing yet,
but last year we went to 3 shows and did well at all of them with our
registered herd. We are hoping to increase our herd in December, and
to take on more shows next summer. Our goal is to hit at least 6
shows next summer and double our show schedule the year after. And
we are continually increasing our herd every year with new
calves. For the most part, we keep most of our heifers and either castrate
or sell our bulls. Our main herd shire is Star K Hot Shot... Who
is a son of Spectrum Hot Stuff. He is almost 2 years old now and we are anticipating his
calves this spring. Our cows sires bloodlines include Mr. Gibbs, ATI
Marvel, Spectrum Hot Stuff, BCF Line Dance Jo2M, and Star K

Characteristics of the Murray
Grey
-
Can be raised wherever beef
cattle are being raised, because of their versatility to all climates.
-
Murray Greys are naturally
polled (hornless) and experience has shown that this characteristic is
passed on to over 90% of the progeny when bred with horned cattle.
-
The Murray Greys dark
pigmentation helps prevent pink eye, cancer eye and sunburned utters.
-
Their color ranges form a
silver to dark or dun grey.
-
Cows average 1200 pounds.
Certainly the most energy efficient cow of any breed, easy calving at
11 months intervals, year after year. Excellent milkiers, for
being just on grass, weaning off calves up to 700lbs while maintaining
their own bodyweight.
-
Bulls average weight is
2000lbs. Strongly built, highly fertile. You don't have to worry about
using a mature bull on first-calf-heifers. These bulls mature at an
early age with a large scrotal circumference.
-
Calves are very lively when
they hit the ground. Very hardy to all climates.
-
Murray Greys are a docile
breed. This ease pays off in both the pasture and the feedlot.
