Each year between 8-12 million dogs, cats, puppies and kittens end up in animal shelters around the country. Some are lost, some are abandoned, some are unwanted, but most are the result of irresponsible pet ownership. Sadly, between 4-6 million of them are euthanized.
*In 7years one female dog & her offspring can be the source of 67,000 puppies.
*In 7 years, one female cat & her young can produce 420,000 kittens.
*There is no limit to the number of offspring males produce.
*Every day in the US, tens of thousands of puppies and kittens are born. Compare this to 11,000 human births each day and you can see there can never be enough homes for them all.
HELP
Being a responsible pet owner means choosing spay or neuter surgery for your pet-It means making a choice that saves lives.
WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH YOU?
Everything. It's hard to imagine that letting your pet have one-or two-litters causes a problem, especially if you find homes for most of your pets litter. But the fact is that "just one litter" DOES cause pet overpopulation. In less than a year, all of the little ones in your pet's litter could be having litters of their own. Daily, thousands of puppies and kittens must be euthanized-each one came from "just one litter".
IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR PET
*Spaying/neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives
*Spaying/neutering can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that are difficult or expensive to treat
*Spaying eliminates uterine or ovariane cancer and reduces the incidence of breast cancer especially if spayed before the first estrous cycle.
*Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.
PREVENT A LITTER
*Spaying/neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions
*Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark territory.
*Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle. Dogs-estrus lasts about 6-12 days, often twice a year. Cats estrus lasts abou6-7 days, 3 or more times a year.Females in heat can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted males.
*Spaying/neutering makes pets less likely to bite. Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been s/n. Neutering makes pets less likely to roam, run away or fight.
COST
The cost are one time only. If you have a litter you must ensure the health of the mother and litter, 2 months of pregnancy, 2 months of weaning and the vet and food bills add up to significant costs and will cost even more if complications exist.
YOU HAVE HOMES
Each home you find means one less home for the dogs/cats in shelters. In less than one year, each of the offspring may have his/her own litter, adding even more animals to the population. The problem of pet overpopulation is created and perpetuated ONE litter at a time.
