Like the wood used for the canes and walking sticks, the wood for the fish also comes from the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri. After cutting, the wood is carefully kiln dried as a means of controlling cracking and to kill any bugs or insects which may be in the wood. Several species of wood are used depending upon the availability, and the size of the fish varies depending upon the diameter of the wood. Each fish on a stringer is a different specy of wood. Each is carefully cut, shaped, sanded, and finished with a laquer. The specy of each fish is generic and intended to represent just what they are, fish. They are strung on a chain stringer with one, two, or three fish on each stringer. Each stringer is unique, due to the fish sizes, shapes, wood species and because each is sculptured by hand, using power tools. They may be hung on the wall, from a mantel, shelf or light fixture, from the rafters, or wherever they may fit in with your décor.
