Heath Ledger is an 18 year old actor, who was born on April, 4 1979 in Subiaco Hospital, Perth, Western Australia. He has recently come into the limelight in the states when he got the leading role in the Fox Television Network's new hour long, weekly show, "Roar". In it, he plays a young Celtic prince (Conor), fated to become a hero. After Conor loses his family and the woman he loves to the Romans and their insatiable need for conquest, he is called upon to unite the warring tribes and lead his people against Rome and their invaders. Conor finds that he must walk a constant tightrope between his desire for revenge and his hope of victory. Although Ledger is a relative newcomer to U.S. audiences, he has become rather popular in his native Australia thanks to his many film, television, and theatre roles. It was through one of these films that I first saw Heath and was impressed with his innate ability to make you forget he was acting. The film that I was lucky enough to see was "Blackrock", which was shown at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. This was an amazing film and I highly suggest it to anyone. Also, Ledger's performance leaves absolutely nothing to be desired. As you can imagine, I was very surprised (but pleasantly so) to learn a few months later that the actor that I had been so taken with would soon be starring in an American television show. I was even more pleased after the first episode of "Roar". To say that I was impressed would be a gross understatement. I think it is rare to see TV shows these days that are very entertaining but manage to retain so much grace and intelligence and I salute Fox for airing it. In addition to "Blackrock" and "Roar", Ledger was also in the feature film, "Paws". His theatre and stage appearances includes the title role in "Peter Pan", as well as: "The Name Of The Father", "Bugsy Malone", "Hamlet", "Royal Hunt For The Sun", and "The Boyfriend". His television work includes "Ship To Shore", "Sweat", "Bush Patrol", and "Corrigan". In the drama "Sweat", which aired on Australia's Network Ten, Heath played Steve (Snowy) Bowles. The series is based around the "Sports West Academy", a training academy for young elite athletes and the young athletes are thrown in together in a 'live-in' situation at SWA. Snowy is a 17 year old cyclist who is gay. Heath's willingness to take such a potentially controversial role I think shows his maturity and dedication. While, sadly, I've never been able to see his performance as Snowy, based on what I have seen, I have no doubt he did a fantastic job. Heath currently resides in Australia, where "Roar" is filmed.
