Interview for the US Dying zine 6/9 1998 When Was Demon Realm first formed? Who are/were its members? Did you ever partake in any other bands? It was in Easter time of '96, that the band was originally formed, and we recorded a demo. But this demo was pretty lousy, and we therefore didn't release it. I still, in a way, like the demo for what it was, but we never really got many positive remarks about it. Some thought that it was just barely ok, but they all hated the sound, which I can understand. Hell, the rehearsal recordings we have done since then have better sound. But anyway, the line up is now: Nocturnaz, the guitarist of Demon Realm, who was in a black/death band that no longer exists called Sakrilegium, together with me, well perhaps more death then black. He is also in a death metal band with me, but this band is at the moment a bit put on ice. The drummer of this band was responsible for the drumming on Demon Realm's first demo, but he didn't really like black metal much and therefore he left. He has been replaced with the ex-drummer of Sakrilegium. In the end we find me, Sharund, I do vocals and since we are in need of a bass player I am trying to learn how to play that, and sing at the same time. (Quite a task…since I can't play bass at all really) If any people living near us reads this and they might be interested in playing the bass for us, then contact us. Anyway, that is pretty much what is cooking along those fronts… Describe your music to the readers. Hmmm now that is a hard question, it is not easy to describe your own music. But I guess that you could say it is rawish, somewhat fast black metal. Mostly in the primitive end, with some slow and mid paced parts, that is pretty much what I think up to describe it. But as I said, it is hard to judge your own music… Do you listen to anything other than death/black metal? If so, what is it? Well, I listen to some, shall we say classic bands, like Mercyful Fate, Venom, Celtic Frost, and Slayer. Some of the bands that originated, and influenced the death and black metal area. I find some thrash bands interesting, and I do still enjoy some of the older Anthrax and Megadeth etc… I listen to a bit of gothic music, but mostly more in the metal vein. Gothrock I find extremely boring. Doom is a style that I really love. I do at times listen to some classical music, but mostly the baroque composers, and absolutely none of that horrid romanticism period. Things like Mussorgksky, who I know is quite well known in black metal circles, is good. Wagner is interesting. Grieg has made some interesting stuff. And also J. S. Bach has made a few good things, although Bach was way to Christian. I guess that is just about it, I guess. Who were your main influences with your music? I have been asked this before, and I find it hard to say. Since I don't feel that we get especially influenced by anything, but still a little influenced by pretty much everything we hear and find good. There are some bands that we list as being our influences, such as Mercyful Fate, Venom, Mayhem, early Gorgoroth, old Immortal. "Dark Throne!!!", Nocturnaz would probably say, although I'm not a big fan of them, but two of their albums are good., old stuff mainly I would say, Possessed, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and so many more way too numerous to mention. What are your favourite European bands? Do you have any favourites in the states? Why do you like these bands? Ohhh boy, I hear so many bands all the time, and a lot of great bands among them. Of black metal I can say that one of my favourite "newcomer" bands is Keep Of Kallesin, oddly enough Norwegian, and I am definitely not a follower of this Norway worship, when it comes to black metal. Quality doesn't spring from a certain place of origin. Another band that I hold in high regard due to their originality, is Sear Bliss. Although I prefer their older, more blackish sound. Another great band is Autumn Leaves, a Danish death metal band. Also Aurora, gothic mixed with melodic death, also a Danish band. Blazing Eternity is a Danish black metal band, with a lot of gothic elements, who are quite good. Twin Obscenity is a Norwegian band, who mixes death black and doom quite exceptionally. And in the raw black metal vein, Pagan Winter from Germany is absolutely great, Skyforger and Heresiarh both from Latvia are fantastic, and Belgium's Gotmoor rules. But also a lot of the good old bands, such as Samael, Marduk, Immortal Gorgoroth etc… are bands that I like for one reason or another. Some maybe for technical abilities, some for shear aggression. Most of them has something different to offer, but I could mention hordes of bands that I like, both European and American. From the US I like Morbid Angel of course, I like Insatanity, Garden Of Shadows and many more. Canada has a couple of great bands to offer too. Gorguts used to be really fantastic, but I hear that they suck now, really too bad. I also like the Canadian Sacramentary Abolishment. Also Neuraxis is a good Canadian band. From South America I find Mortem to be killer, and also Krisiun is good. Old Sepultura, like "Schizophrenia", is fantastic as well. Sarcophago but I could be rambling about this subject for hours and hours… What are your feelings on the "electronic" age of blackmetal? For example, bands like Burzum going ambient, and Samael using a drum machine. We'll possibly play a cover of Samael's "Baphomet's Throne" on the demo. So maybe you can figure how much I like this band. And well, about them using a drum computer… Well, I really prefer a human drummer, but in Samael's defence they atleast programmed the drums ok. Which isn't all bands that do that. As for Burzum going ambient, well, I never really liked Burzum much. I found it plain boring, Nocturnaz likes Burzum, but I do not really care. Ambient is where the trend is now. It has pretty much moved away from black metal, and on to either gothic, or ambient. Or it is in the process of moving. I can't stand ambient, I find it boring, and I don't really like music where there are no real instruments played. But taste differs I guess. It is too bad that it has to go that way I think, but there is a big difference in using a drum computer, and going ambient. Using a drum computer isn't a good solution, I think, but if you program it good, then it isn't all that bad. But still a second rate solution. Samael and also Limbonic Art are two bands that has done it quite well, but still a real drummer I would have preferred… I know you used to be involved in the 'zine scene as well. Are you still an active member? I was, and is. the editor of Crimson Magazine. We are currently working on finally getting our second issue out, which has been delayed for way too long. But we don't have much time, nor much money, which are both things that the zine takes a lot of. But anyway if you desire info on this, look up our homepage http://home5.inet.tele.dk/crimson/ and there you should find most info you need. It deals with pretty much anything in the extreme metal genre, (demos are very welcome) and is basically a music only magazine, in pretty high quality. Religion has always been a big part of most death metal lyrics. I noticed a bit of Odinist philosophies in your songs. Where do you stand on the spectrum of religion? Hmmm interesting observation. I am what you call a polytheist. I am on one hand a satanist, (atleast by some form of definition of the word) and besides that I believe in the old gods of my country. The norse mythology is not only interesting, but also a big part of me, who I am. My culture and my heritage, are some things that I hold in high regard. Odinist philosophies in my lyrics, well perhaps. Maybe the basic philosophy, but the content isn't really dealing with the old gods, how much ever I respect them. I have in a way combined Satanism, and the belief in the old gods. My hypothesis is that Satan and Odin are actually the same, just with different names, the same goes for Zeus from Greek mythology, and even as far away as Shiva. I think that they all basically originate from the same basic belief, and has over the ages evolved a bit differently. If you look at pretty much any of the, by the Christians called primitive and heathen, religions. You will find that the basic structure is pretty much the same, the stories and myths are different, due to that they've evolved apart. But I think they all came from the same basic elements, they all have a head god, who is more or less best defined as a destiny god, there is a war god, a god of love, a god of pretty much anything that is important. I think the only religion that is a lie, is the jewish, and any religion emanating from it. As you might guess by this, I do not see Satan as being a Christian god of evil. But rather a god that has been adapted into Christianity, by the same means that they used to get people to turn away from their old gods, when Christianity progressed. One of the most clear examples would have to be the Greek god of fertility Pan, after the Christians had their finger in the game, Pan suddenly had horns and goat legs. The Christians has done this to pretty much any god, that they've encountered, and therefore I think that Satan is just another of these… What are your future plans for Demon Realm? Are there any releases scheduled? Yes, we have our first real demo released in Augustand we've also played our first gig not long ago I may add. We've been invited to play sometime (no set date though) with a band called Ad Noctum. We'll try and maybe get on some compilations. And then we want to try and see if we can get something done with a 7" release, probably a split with Ad Noctum, either do it ourselves or find someone who'll do it for us, start of next year the plan is. But that is for the time to tell, and after that… Well, I can't say. We might get offered a deal, and go to some label. Or we'll make another demo, I expect. Tis all which I can behold the future doth bringeth, for us mere mortal beings… Thank you very much for your time! Do you have any last words for our readers? Hmmm… Well the usual I think. Order our demo, come to any possible shows, visit our homepage. And thanks to you Jesse for this interview, Thanks to anyone who found the time to read it. May the future bring us, who art not of the false god, might and glory… Interview for the web based Swedish Metal Inquisition 9/9 1998 1. Could you give us a brief presentation and the history of the band? As for a presentation. We are Demon Realm, a primitive and pretty rawish, mostly uppaced black metal, mostly in the old vein. We consist of three individuals Nocturnaz – Guitars, Astraborgnasyl – Battery and Sharund – Vocals. As for the history. Well Demon Realm was originally formed in March of 96, we immediately made a demo, we then decided not to release this. We then lost our drummer and we spent a lot of time looking for a new drummer, we even at a point contemplated a drum computer, but luckily this was not necessary because we got a real drummer. In the start of 98 we recruited a drummer, we started rehearsing and making songs on the two year day of our first conception and recording. We rehearsed and wrote songs for a few months, and then we recorded our second demo, which was released in august. In august we also did our first show. At the moment we are trying to promote our band a little, getting some reviews and interviews, from around the world. 2. Can you name your recordings and how did the recording process of those worked out? Well there was our first recording and our first demo "Burning The Angel Wings". Around two and a half years ago, the recording of that didn't go too well, and the sound didn't turn out too well, which was why it was never released officially. Most people who we let have a copy of it also said that the sound wasn't too great, and well it's quite far from what we do now, but we've talked about releasing this in a extremely limited edition, something like 33 copies or something similar. Next we did "Upon The Alter Of Darkness", it's musically different, faster, more aggressive and a bit more structured. Also soundwise it is far superior to the first demo, the only problem in the sound I can see, well major problem that is, the guitar sometimes drowns a bit in the fastest parts, it's too low in the mix, but it can still be heard. Next time the guitar should be made far more prominent, the recording process of this was more satisfying I think, it was all recorded during one evening, and a couple of days later vocals were added, and then the following day it was mixed. 3. Which bands would you compare the band with? This is a question that I have problems answering, since I can't really myself find bands we sound very much alike. What I heard from people who have heard it are usually rather odd, but some of them are for instance, a guy from Portugal compared us to Blasphemy the Canadian band quite odd for me since I think that band is lousy another said it was like a mix of Incantation and Graveland well Incantation is death metal and I'd say quite far from what we do Graveland well based on the one and only song I've heard I'd have to say a complete mystery to me another compared us to Dark Throne a band I find to be ok but nothing fantastic they're a bunch of reformed hippies hehe our guitarist will be pissed by me saying this though haha another well actually two people compared it to Burzum well I wouldn't know about that Burzum has always kind of bored me it's ok but nothing special heard a person compare us to Immortal but I'd say the only thing similar to Immortal is the pace we play at… but anyway these are things people have told me we sound like but I can't really think of any bands that we sound alike 4. Go in more to the music and the lyrics what is the inspiration for the band? Well our music is pretty much old-fashioned black metal raw, primitive and mostly fast. Musically we do not really feel to be inspired by anything in particular but then again inspired by anything and everything we hear of great music our music is not original or innovative but we do not sit down say lets do a song inspired a lot by this or that but in general I would say that what inspires us are old bands like Venom of course Hellhammer is a band I love Possessed "7 Churches" is amongst the best CDs ever released,Celtic Frost Mercyful Fate this kind of bands also newer generation black metal bands like Mayhem, old Gorgoroth, old Immortal, Sear Bliss, Abysmal, are bands that I love and I guess that we are more inspired by bands we love a lot more then just anything also we all like death metal Morbid Angel, Death, Mortum from Peru are fantastic better then any retro band trying to sound like death metal was Mortem just does it the way it was with the same feeling as the old bands does the newer just tries to reproduce the old feel while Mortum just has it as does so many other south american bands does. Lyrically well inspiration I do not really know often the words just come to me a bit at a time I think they're all a bit special at least to me they deal with darkness demonic thoughts and antichristian hatred also my fascination with death I am rather curios about the effects and what follows death a thing that obtains a lot of my thoughts also infinity and other hard to grasp things 5. Talk about the support to the band from media so far in terms of reviews etc. has it been good or bad? Well it hasn't been long since we started sending out promos so there hasn't been many reviews that we've got so far but I expect to get some soon both good and bad I think we'll get actually I have not yet gotten a single review back but a guy from France who runs Spikekult label and distro also does a zine he thought it was great and he wanted to do a interview soon but it is hard to say at the current time but we have sold about 25 demos already other then that I wish to hail Infernus Fanzine, Skavenlight and Dying zine all of which we were featured in before releasing the demo 6. Talk about the live shows you have done so far, what has been the best and the worst moments on stage any great memories? Well since we at the current time only have performed live once so it's rather limited what I can say about this subject we played with Danish death metal band and one of the best I might add namely Autumn Leaves and beyond that some other bands not worth being mentioned we got to play last although we have only officially released our second demo (it was in fact not ready until the night of the show) but probably mainly because we play black metal and it wouldn't be fitting for us to play early while the sun was still shining so we were quite pleased with the time of our performance we didn't play to well musically I think our set was filled with mistakes and so but I think the show as such wasn't to bad the sound was ok and considering most of the audience had never heard us before no one noticed any of the errors we also played extremely fast a set meant to be around 35 minutes was almost 10 minutes shorter then intended but I guess most first shows goes bad I think we did a ok show we just need to rehearse our songs more before the next time we play live… 7. Is any members of the band involved in other projects/bands ? Well yes but none I'd like to get further into here… 8. What are your plans for the coming months and year? Any tour plans? As said earlier for now just awaiting the reviews and general response on our demo maybe seeing if we can get to play live a few times if any opportunity arises Ad Noctum a fellow Danish black metal band invited us to play with them sometime but I do not know when start of next year I guess around there we might do a split 7" with Ad Noctum either by finding a label to release it or by releasing it ourselves then perhabs a new demo or maybe a album if we are offered a deal but that is something time shall tell

After death there is no hope and in black metal there is no hope in its total immersion in nihilism and a spiritual darkness which wishes suicide upon human earth. Do not come to black metal for political correctness, as you should not come to heavy metal or hardcore/punk expecting the same, because black metal is about death, killing, extermination and other forms of resignation to the hopeless insanity and self-destructive evil in humanity. However, black metal does suggest a survival of death in journeys that "stimulate the fantasy of mortals" as Varg Vikernes says.

Death metal is a science of taking the nihilistic brutality and frustrated anger of modern life and making it into a language of an awareness of what it is to live after hope. Where others preach tolerance, death metal preaches a violent, dissonant, destructive reality that leaves no questions about the human spiritual death that comes of this age. This music is to "heavy metal" what a blowtorch is to a cigarette lighter: a concentration of power that is so unbelievably rigorous, focused, vicious and dark that it could only be what we call DEATH METAL.
