Costume Breakdown

Bracers and Wrist Guard

The wrist guard was pretty easy. I cut and shaped the leather (which was also treated with wax and baked) The design was cut in with a Dremel power tool (believe it or not) and then the detail was painted in with silver. The bracer (the padding worn under the wrist guard) was originally leather in the movie. I use fabric and quilted it. It was really needed as the wrist guards hard leather needed padding against the arm.

Dress Tunic

The tunic was made from some sari fabric (for the sleeves) and a second hand silky bed sheet. I peiced together black and red fabric with a gold lace trim overlay for the collar. I used poetic license on the buttons (which were silver in the movie) and I found these beautiful Black and gold asian style buttons which looked great. I noticed the black and gold buttons I choose match the color scheme of the shirt better than silver.

Leather Surcoat

The coat was an interesting concept. We purchaced two trench coats at a second hand store; one leather and one vinyl. I then deconstucted both coats, taking off buttons and collars etc. Using the leather coat as the main structure and adding peices of the vinyl to add length. The trim was a combination of basic one inch black with a gold sewn ontop. The whole piece was sewn on the coat. Interesting side note while researching the coat. I had to stop motion the DVD for about a half hour just to find a shot of "Boromir" from behind. I found a shot in the scene where Merry and Pippin are getting a sword fighting lesson with Boromir. Sitting that close to the television examining Sean Bean's back side made me look a little crazy. Note the coat doesn't have trim at the back and I have proof.
