Expect Success With Papin

(Feb. 20) Kevin Swayne's successful NFL career
with the New York Jets left the Dragons with an enormous void to
fill at the OS position. Not only did the signing of free-agent
receiver Steve Papin replace Swayne, some may argue it took New
York's offense to a higher level - considering the newest Dragons'
AFL credentials.
Papin, a former Division II All-American at Portland State, has
had one of the most successful Arena Football careers in history.
In only his sophomore season, Papin was named the AFL's "Don't
Blink" Player of the Year. The following year, he was awarded the
same honor. Papin hopes to eclipse those achievements with the
Dragons after signing as a free agent this off-season from the San
Jose SaberCats.
"For what [Kevin] has done for the organization over the years,
there's definitely some pressure. But being a professional is all
about playing and not worrying about guys in front of you," said
Papin from his San Jose, CA home. "It's about just going out and
doing your job. My thing now is trying to win a championship."
The offensive specialist was disappointed to see Aaron Garcia
leave for a NFL contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Yet, he's
confident second-year QB Danny Ragsdale will step up in the AFL
record-holder's place.
"My first reason for coming to New York was to play with Aaron
and his leaving had me questioning, 'Did I do the right thing?'"
said Papin. "I talked to Ragsdale and we have a job to do. I wish
Aaron the best, but we as Dragons have to go on without him."
After their chat, Papin expects the second-year Ragsdale will
ease into the starting quarterback role. In college, Ragsdale was
awarded the Gagliardi Trophy, presented to the most outstanding
player in Division III football while attending the University of
the Redlands. Papin expressed his full confidence in Ragsdale,
asserting, "I've talked to Aaron, Rags, and the coaches and they
all agree he's a quality player."
On a team that will see their third starting quarterback in
seven seasons while maintaining a successful record, John
Gregory's coaching was one of the strongest incentives for Papin,
who said "I enjoy coach Gregory's scheme and the way he does
things on offense."
Papin made it clear that he has full confidence in New York's
ability to soar this season. "The talent they have here and with
myself coming in to contribute, we do have a chance to win the
East," Papin said. "I feel we have a pretty good chance of doing
it, that's why I came to New York because I wanted to play for a
team that had the chance to compete for an ArenaBowl."
