According to the Prisoners in 2002 report from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS)
- U.S. prison population grew by 2.6% in 2002.
- Total number of Americans in prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities was 2,166,260.
- The federal government is the nation’s largest jailer, with 163,528 inmates in federal prisosn.
- The four states with the highest prison populations are:
California: 162,317
Texas: 162,003
Florida: 75,210
New York: 67,065- State prisons were 1% to 16% over capacity in 2002
- The federal prison system was 33% over capacity.
- At the end of 2002, more than 4.7 million adults were on probation or parole.
