I felt the need to e-mail you after I bought and finished reading “Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul” in the same afternoon. The book is truly inspiring! I did not decide to read the book, because of someone I know that is incarcerated - but because I am a Corrections Officer for the state of Texas.
I recently graduated from college with a degree in Political Science/Criminal Justice and the field of Corrections was the last place I thought that I would find myself, but I wanted some sort of experience to accompany my degree.
Prior to beginning my shift work on the Unit I personally decided that I would treat the offenders like people and with the respect that I hoped for in return. My inspiration for this attitude came from a standard that was held by a nationally respected former warden of one of the Federal Prisons - Daniel Luther. He is known for implementing his system of respect and he was rewarded by having record low violence rates and record high ACA ratings. "If you want people to behave responsibly and treat you with respect, then you treat other people that way" is his quote that he stood by, and it is also the one that I read everyday before going to work.
The respect goes a long way. Many of the offenders actually thank me for treating them like human beings, and that really makes me feel good about my job! I know that many inmates regret their past mistakes and honestly want to better themselves so that they will be able to cope once they return to the “free world.” I know that the position I hold as a corrections officer is probably one of the most despised by the offenders, but it really depends on the attitude you have as you walk through the gates - whether you actually want to help the people within or hurt them!
A few months back as Hurricane Rita was headed this way many of the coastal units were forced to evacuate to other units. Our unit was given the chance to house about 600 extra inmates during this time. They were given mattresses and stayed in both gyms on the floors. We did get storms along with winds in our area - so naturally the power is going to go out at some point (it was about 9 pm). I was standing in the main hall when this happened and could see directly into one of the gyms as the generators popped on - and what I saw amazed me! Our visitors in the gym had formed a large prayer circle complete with hand holding - and it was honestly a genuine effort. They never cease to amaze me!
Thank you for taking the time to send me a much appreciated reply! Also, please keep up the good work. You will never know the exact magnitude that you have on people's lives!

“I cannot express in words the pleasure I received in reading Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul. The stories and testimonies touched a part of my heart that needed stimuli. Some stories fit me like a glove. My struggles are equal in description and experience. Tears and emotions are real when the truth is revealed, exposing the walls and masks I was hiding behind. Thank you for giving me courage and inspiration to know I am not alone in my feelings.
Due to my shame, drug use, and finally prison; I have been estranged from my family going on three years. Reading your book has allowed me to find the strength to write them and ask for their forgiveness. Thank you.”

Your book, Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul, was floating around the maximum-security cell block I found myself in three months ago. Reading through the first few stories I felt as though the Holy Spirit started tugging at my heart. Within the first hour or two I found myself weeping almost uncontrollably. Having stopped to allow the Holy Spirit to heal, and mend my broken heart something happened. It was as if I knew my Father needed to hear from me. Well, after praying for the Spirit to lead me in what to say. The feeble note I had started to write turned into a very spirit filled complete nine page letter of thankfulness of how deeply grateful I was to have such a loving and caring Father in my life.I sent off this letter not even knowing if my father would read it. You see, we've had a very distant and strained relationship for 40-plus years. Still in prison, after waiting over two months, I called my sister to say hello. We shared a little before she stopped and told me what a beautiful, warm, touching letter my mother had read to her. How my father was just coming home from the hospital; couldn't talk, walk, or read much. So Mom and Dad stopped at the mailbox and there was a letter from their son being in prison again. Mom opened it up and started shaking all over. She then began to read it to my "Pops." Well, praise be to Our Father in Heaven for leading my hand in what to write. You see my letter was exactly what my parents needed. At the exact time it was needed, and had helped my Pops to find an inner strength to start living again. He is now walking on his own, reading the letter I write weekly and is mumbling to my mom to go check the mailbox.
Thank you, everyone, for putting together such an inspiring book of warm stories.

“I went to the library the other day and I found your book, Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul. So I got it, came back to my cell, and started to read it. Poem's, story's, etc. I thought, oh my God. I'm here in my cell with an old man who is almost 70 years old. He's blind and can't read, so I started reading to him. He started crying, and that got me crying. I can't put this book down. It's all true and so much about my own life. I have no money to send you. If I did I'd send it all. That's how much I love this book. I've only been back in the prison system two months and already have bad nerves and worried sick at times. But what this book has done in the last 24 hours has given me "new hope" and strength to go on through this hell.”

"I found a copy of 'Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul' on a book shelf. It was pretty badly worn and some of the pages were missing, but I began to read it and was inspired from the very first story. As I read, I began to cry. I honestly can't even tell you why I was crying, but I was. I also felt a sense of hope and a desire to do something different with my life."

“This is my first time being incarcerated. Some days I feel like a dying flower that God has turned his face from. Some days I tell myself my band on my wrist to identify me is a hospital band, and I'm lucky to be alive. The dreams at night are hard—where you're getting ready to go somewhere to see your beloved family and friends—then the crushing despair that it was just a dream. I feel so alone—my friends have abandoned me, but I know God has not. Thank you for publishing such an encouraging book called ‘Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul.’”

“Although I deeply love my son, I have not seen him in almost five years. For this reason, the first time picked up ‘Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul,’ I just couldn’t read much. The feelings the stories activated brought back almost unbearable emotional pain, guilt, and shame. A year or so later, I picked up the book again and forced myself to read it, through streaming tears while hidden in my cell. The chapters on Family and Love were particularly challenging for me, and I found many of the stories touched my heart and inspired my soul. For me, it was like Ben Franklin once said, ‘It is when the well is dry that we know the price of water.’"

I could relate to the sadness in other people’s lives and the pain of being at the bottom of life, locked away from society and my loved ones. Now, that I’m free, I would gladly drop all that I am doing to fly the country and speak with the co-author for free . . . anytime I could, because this book is definitely touched by God to lift the spirits of those behind bars.”

“I am an attorney. Almost half of my work is in criminal defense. One thing my work has shown me is that many people see those who have been convicted of a crime as less than human. Many judges fail to consider the individual person and his worth when they sentence him. The first time I noticed ‘Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul,’ I was intrigued. When I finally bought a copy, I bought two: one for me and one for a client. I was pleased to see stories that acknowledge that most people who are incarcerated are decent people who made a mistake.”

Each story has helped me in one way or another. I've been affected dearly by this book. It has allowed me to realize that I am not alone and that the only prison that can hold me bound is the prison I build in my own mind. "Emotionally Euphoric—Reading this particular book has opened and enlighten my heart and soul. I've been made aware of that people placed behind prison bars are not to be forgotten. One needs to separate that it's the behavior, which placed them here. They are as human as anyone else and shed tears, feel pain, love and have regrets. Whoever reads this book or has a loved one incarcerated will reach another level of understanding in one's life. Open yourself truly when reading this book and you will feel what I'm trying to say."

"I currently teach in a Maximum Security Juvenile Detention Center, and my students LOVE Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul." There is a waiting list for it in our school library. I have not had the chance to personally read the book, because our students always have our copies checked out. The boys I work with have their own feelings legitimized when they read the stories in this book. My boys really do enjoy the book and the stories usually prompt discussions of their own lives and some very good writing. Thank you for making their own lives real to them. It is hard to connect with an academic society in a meaningful and pro-social way without literature that you can see yourself in. Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul puts the stories and ownership of those stories into the hands of my boys. It also presents the stories in a way that does not damage the fabric of society. This is a VERY empowering book."

"Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul helps overcome the most damaging problem that prevents inmates from developing the kind of positive self image that can lead to the kind if personal change that reduces the chance they will return to prison after their release. Guilt and the resultant low self-esteem often convinces inmates that it is not worth their effort to change their behavior. These stories provide the kinds of role modeling that addresses the problem. Inmates have few visible role models to help them develop and lead positive post release lives. We try to do that with The Prison Show and Tom Lagana has provided the best role models in Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul."

“I just received my copy of Chicken Soup for the Prisoners Soul. What a beautiful book! I am the leader of Prison Fellowship Ministries at my church, and I am often questioned on this ministry I choose to serve. People don't question other ministries. If you help the elderly or people of poverty everyone pats you on the back. Our ministry is not as easily accepted. Many are baffled as to why anyone would bother.
I’m going to order a box of books for my volunteer group. It is a must for prison ministry volunteers! Plus I will keep a copy on hand at work. For now on when I am asked, "Why," I will loan out your book. Thank you so much for caring about the forgotten ones. It is actually a loved one in prison who told me about your book. “I read Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soulfor the very first time after I stumbled on to it by what seemed like an accident. It was going to pretty much be thrown away with the trash. I started it last night and I had to stop half-way through it because I could not see. All of the stories brought shame, and what I had left of the bottled up pain and anger, to the surface of my heart and I truly shed more tears. It felt so good to let go and release the agony I have been going through because the Lord knows that I needed to shed those feelings as I could not be really a part of His body in Christ. He placed me at the right time to find your book because he knew that I would be a tool to get men closer to Him. I read the last half today and again let loose. It is truly inspirational reading that rekindled my heart with hope and faith and continuing forgiveness. Do you know of a pen pal that could write me a friendly letter once in a while?”

“I am currently incarcerated in Texas and serving a five-year sentence. I have been to prison twice before. I’m married for twelve years and have two wonderful children.
Recently I decided to change and quit being so bad. I don’t want or like the life I’m currently leading. I recently came across the "Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul" while in transit. Unfortunately, it wasn’t mine.
I have never cried at a movie, let alone a book, but the first two stories I read made me ball like a baby. I told my wife about the book and she couldn’t believe that I actually admitted to crying. She was so happy.

“I think all the people who put their heart and soul into Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul are God’s gift to this earth. They are truly wonderful. The book is outstanding and a lot more. One single book that contains so many helpful issues, and people to contact, people that care and understand. I’m going to tell everyone I know about this book. There story by R. L. Todd, entitled “Mom’s Final Act,” I have read at least three times. I can feel what he is saying, and I can almost feel his pain, because I lost my mom September 8, 1999 while I was here, at this prison. They refused to let me see her on her death bed. I never got to tell her goodbye. I’m twisted behind that, and the hurt from it is still very fresh in my heart and soul. I don’t believe I’ll ever get over her death. Other than God, she was my only love, my first love, my best friend. Now she’s gone and so is my daddy. I’ve almost closed myself off from the world because I can’t bring myself to deal with anyone, up until I started reading your book.”

“So many inmates will be able to come home to their families and be able to make wiser choices because of you and this book. There is only one suggestion that I can make for the next Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul. You might think about including a box of tissues with each copy. I cried all the way through this wonderful book.”

"From the moment I got Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul in my hands, I could not let go. I have quoted some stories when I am with patients. After I tell them later where the story is from, they cannot believe it. I know you are touching many people’s hearts."

“My daughter received Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul on Thursday. She has been leading Bible studies in the jail and has had about twenty women participate each night. Thursday night, she planned on reading one story from your book. She had to change plans though . . . after she read the first story, most of the girls were weeping and begged her to read another. She has decided to read two stories each night. Many times, when she calls now, she tells me of the blessings received from your book. Last night, she told me of a new inmate who was feeling really sad and how my daughter talked with her and left her copy of your book. My daughter asked her not to get too many tears on it.”

"Your book is wonderful! I have given several to members of our legislator and they all admire the quality of the stories. I talked with a mother at one of our parole workshops, and she told me that her son was upset with her for sending him Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul. He only wanted religious materials mailed to him. She stated that during a later visit, he told her how much he enjoyed your book and thanked her for sending it to him. She was surprised at his turn around concerning your book. He told her he reads and re-reads many of the stories. Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul has certainly touched his life. He shares the stories with other inmates. The inspiration this wonderful book is giving others is simply wonderful. Thank you for taking on this project and for touching so many people's hearts and lives."

“Many of our 700 minors have been marginalized by their families and their communities. Many feel forgotten by God. Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul lets them know that they are not forgotten. It symbolizes care and compassion and it has been transformative for many of our youth. It’s actually the most sought after book at juvenile hall. It would be great if we could get on the wish-list for another 200 copies of your wonderful book. Thank you so much for every thing you do.”

“I have read from the book, Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul, and believe it is a powerful tool to help inmates cope, as well as to educate society as to the many complexities of a prison population. We need to throw away, not people, but the brushes that paint with broad strokes.”

"I want to personally tell you that these Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul books have had a direct positive impact on the youth under our supervision. One girl has actually turned her life around based on this book. When I came in this morning there was a trip to the dentist and girls were carrying these books to read!"

“I will first admit to not completely finishing the book as of yet. However, as I read each story one at a time, I can't help but think that such writings should not be limited to a market of individuals who are/have been incarcerated. In fact, as a father of two young boys, reading these stories reminds me very strikingly of why I strive to do my best and make the right decisions each and every day. I do not want to find myself in a situation where I am writing to others explaining how I made mistakes and left two children behind to not know their father. Please consider expanding the marketing efforts to those of us who are reminded to do the right thing and want to remain on this side of the prison gates.”

“Your kindness and encouragement through out this project has been like a big warm hug to my inner child. That means a lot to me. I read the story, “Putting on the Mask,” and felt sadness remembering the masks my mother used to wear during our visits and the tears she shed. I think every DA and judge in the world should read Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul and especially that story. If these books are going over so well in other institutions, as they’re going here, then there are tons of blessings coming from these stories.”

“Encouraging the men and women confined in prison and jail to keep their hopes high for the future is one of the great challenges for those of us who work in corrections. “With 500,000 kids currently in our foster system -- and many of these prisoners' stories coming from the roulette of foster life -- I could feel while reading how so many were not raised with tough love or any kind of love with day-to-day parents who cared about each and every learning decision in a child's life. Yet by reading these stories, hopefully prisoners can open up; feel they're not alone in their being abandoned as youth and have the courage to shed their criminal skin and molt into new human beings. Your book has the power to make that deep of a change.”

"As an ex-state senator, ex-con, and concerned citizen, Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul provides a powerful insight on the minds and struggles of today's prisoners. Having lived on both sides of the wall, I am able to view how the thoughts of those inside can now be shared with those on the outside. This book lets a person open up to the emotions of those on the other side that they are blinded to."

“Reading these stories has reinforced my belief that there is a part within every one of us which delights in contributing to the spiritual well-being of others. It is clear to me that not one of us is all bad, nor is there one of us that is all good. Perhaps it is true that the difference between the best of us and the worst of us is really rather small.”

“As a wife of an incarcerated man, I found strength in the human race. When this part of my life started, I never thought I would make it through this. These stories from these authors show inmates are still humans. Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul helped me feel like there is still hope for the future. Keep up the great work giving us inspirational stories.”

"While reading the story, "A Convict's Letter to his Son" to my 9th grade at risk youth, our vice-principal unexpectedly stepped into the classroom for a brief visit. Later she said, ‘I was stunned at how quiet the students were for you.’ I said, ‘Ann, they were quiet because they were listening to a letter from a father they all wished they had. They were hanging on his every word.’ When I explained that the story was from the upcoming book Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul, Ann got wide-eyed and asked, ‘When can I get one of those books?’"

“The stories for Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul are some of the best! This book is sure to change the outlook that society has placed on our prisoners. I know these stories will let those on the outside know that prisoners are people too -- with hearts and souls like the rest of us!!!”

“This book should be required reading for all high school students. The earlier in their high school career the better. So many who shared their stories with us on those pages were crying out for the chance to do things differently, wishing someone, anyone would have showed them the path they were heading headlong into and only discovered too late what caused them their own particular pain and suffering. I encourage every teacher to read this book as a way of showing them that they too can make a difference in the lives of their students.”

“To find an answer, we must first understand the problem. The stories in Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul helped me realize that we may be gone but not forgotten. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that so many people care about inmates and want us to succeed when we return to society as productive citizens. This book gives readers a candid glimpse of the prisoner’s soul. To love them or hate them is the reader’s choice, but to understand them is a human mandate.”

“Someone at sometime will personally know an incarcerated person. Despite current feelings toward the incarcerated, it is of utmost importance to remember prison inmates as sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, uncles and aunts. “Doing time" is not exclusively for the incarcerated, but for the families as well. Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul is a must read for anyone and everyone who experiences prison in his or her life.”

“My wife and I have really enjoyed reading the stories so much that we are working out how we can both get more involved in helping the youth here in the UK so that prison is not the answer. With these stories, this process is now happening faster than we thought and now my wife has started the process of working with youth at risk. Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to share in this wonderful work.”

“The human soul is the same ‘outside’ and ‘inside’ the prison walls. For many inmates ‘doing time’ is a wake-up-call for the deeper freedom that the soul desires. This book, along with good programs in our prison systems can be a ripple toward that healing of the soul.”

“I am amazed at the stories of courage, generosity and understanding of those who choose to work in the prison system. Their dedication and strength has inspired me. Reading these stories has given me the opportunity to learn incredible lessons about the value of friends, family, and freedom. All of the "if I had it to do over again's" seem to focus in this area. I will remember this most of all.”
Robert MacPhee
President, Personal Growth Resources, Inc.
“Reading the stories is a wonderful experience. From the outside looking in, few people have any idea what prison life is like. We hear rumors, and see movies, but we wonder if these are credible. To read stories written by folks who are directly involved in prison life, even prisoners themselves, is a real eye-opening experience. Most people have made a lot of mistakes, and there are consequences for those mistakes. Just because someone is in prison, and their liberty has been taken away, they still have needs, desires, and hearts full of feelings. I've been deeply touched by this book, and am sure it will touch the hearts of all who read it.”

“The need for something that touches the heart of the convict and their loved ones is probably greater than any of us can comprehend. I can see scores of people discovering this as a ‘mission’ and buying copies of Chicken Soup for the Prisoner’s Soul to send as gifts to incarcerated strangers. A distant vision, but great potential.”

“These stories help others to see those who are incarcerated as people with real feelings and real emotions. The stories are insightful. As I have read the stories I realize that even the most hardened criminal has something to teach others. What is most inspiring is reading a story of a prisoner coming to God in the most unexpected way. A must read for anyone who wants to learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness. “

“Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul has truly been a gift from on high. I lived the prison experience, incarcerated in the Federal Bureau of Prison for five years. “Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul stories give us the reminder of the lonely and forgotten voices of those incarcerated. If we fear what we do not understand, then, we can sympathize when the common elements of humanity are brought to light. Everyone needs forgiveness and the opportunity and encouragement to make positive change in their lives. People can change and people can facilitate change in others. The proof is in these powerful and inspiring tales of forgiveness, and determination to make positive, lasting change in a life. These stories bring the hope that everyone, even those in prison, can experience miracles.”

“When I graduated from college with a teacher's credential, I never dreamed that I would eventually spend 18 years teaching in the prison system. I quickly discovered that incarcerated men need far more than reading, writing, and math skills. Every "Chicken Soup for the Soul" story I used gave light to those who felt they were in the dark and gave substance to all of us. Some of the most edifying experiences we all shared originated in these stories. Chicken Soup for the Soul books gave meaning where there may have been none and calm where there was anger. These stories teach as the fables did before Guttenberg's press and they are more awakening for most psyches than Freud.”

“Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul is a book that I will read over and over and over again! Not only did the stories remind me of my own son but also of the hundreds of prisoners with whom I have corresponded over the last twenty-one years.
Struggling to accept the incarceration of my twenty-three-year-old son, I was moved to contact those authors who had submitted stories that were close in resemblance to my own. People whom I felt had "walked a mile in my shoes" or I in theirs. I was blessed to receive replies of encouragement and inspiration from Curt Boudreaux, Brian Brookheart, Rod Carter and Jesse Garcia, Jr. I take these letters and cards out on occasion when I need to remind myself that I am not responsible for my son's choices. Many of these dear souls ministered to me in a profound way by telling me that they were praying for my son and I and his victim who has been disfigured for life. Others wrote of having their own loved ones in prison.
Thank you for sending my son the autographed copy I purchased for him. I've heard that he has read it several times over and the poem that spoke the loudest to him was WASTED TIME. I encouraged him to take the time to write the contributing author.
I am eager to locate funds in order to support the second printing of your book, as I would like to get this book into the hands of every prisoner with whom I have and continue to correspond. I am beginning to compile a list and will start to collect my pennies and odd change as I am not working at this time.”
