Music In My Life

Yes, music DOES soothe the soul.... But there's more than just listening to it.

Ever since I was a baby, my mother always used to play the radio to put me to sleep at night, so I have practically grown up with music inside me. From the age of about 8, I was in lots of school plays (I remember my first being 'Frosty The Snowman' and I was dressed as a snowman lol) and I kept continuing with these plays.

At the age of about 10 or so I began singing for the school church choir and playing the piano. I must say though, I don't regret dedicating most of my time to it one bit! From then on I started learning some drum skills and some guitar aswell. Playing the recorder (flute) was a requirement at school too but it was alot of fun. Oh no... I just remembered my fave groups in 6th grade.. Ahhhh... New Kids On The Block and an Aussie group called Girlfriend.. ahhhhh

Then highschool stepped in.. and Reservoir High is majorly big on music. They held productions and lunch time performances all the time. So, I guess I wanted to get involved as much as I can... and then I started thinking seriously about becoming a performer for life.

Halfway through highschool I started taking singing really serious. I started having lessons, and playing the piano as a guidance for my vocals. BUT I always looked up to the Lord as my inspiration.. and in time, I found that I had a gift.

There was a stage in my life where I had been going through some rough times, so I turned to writing poems and song lyrics. Singing was just something which took me to another place, another level... somewhere where I could be free with everything I was holding inside me, a place which was unlike anything on earth.

Mariah Carey and other artists like Whitney Houston, Kci & Jojo and Boyz II Men have been really big influences to me over the past few years. There ain't ever gonna be other voices like theirs around... But mostly, music is an escape for most people, it's not just about grooving to the beat or anything like that. It's much deeper. It makes us feel things, and it makes us get the 'fuzzies' (somethin me n my bro Trev gots in common hehe). So next time u listen to some music, look into it.. listen to the technique in the voice, and the lyrics.

I have been in various singing competitions and gotten as far as the semi-finals. I've done a few performances for school plays and other places as well, so now I guess I'm just waiting for my big break, chasing all the R&B studios around to see whats up. Well, it's my dream, and who knows... someday it may come true.
