Parent Involvement:
Each school year begins with an Open House. Invitations are mailed to students and their parents and news articles are published in local papers. The evening program begins with a short assembly. After the principal's welcome, the PTSO president, who encourages parental participation, sponsors a membership sign-up table and serves refreshments. Parents next follow their child's schedule of seven I 0-minute classes to meet teachers and to hear their expectations of students. In the fifth week of the first three marking periods, 2 and 112 hours are set aside in the late afternoon or evening for parent-teacher conferences. Parents are encouraged to call the school to reserve conference time with teachers and teachers are asked to call parents when conferences are necessary. Teachers also have 45 minutes of common planning time at the end of each day to contact parents when needed. The PTSO meets every six weeks and solicits parental involvement in sponsoring programs, raising funds, and awarding scholarships. Parents also serve as volunteers and on advisory committees, assist with academic clubs, and support band and athletic booster clubs.
