The Indian River School District's mission is to assure that students
attain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to realize their potential,
meet the challenges of their life choices, and fulfill their responsibilities
as world citizens through a partnership of students, parents, staff, and
community. The district staff of over 800 works daily to achieve this mission
throughout 7 elementary, 2 middle, 2 hi-b schools, and one special school.
Geographically, the district is one of the state's largest, encompassing
over 360
square miles in southeastern Sussex County. The constituents consistently
unite in their efforts to promote, support, and assure the best education
for the over 7000 district students. The elementary and middle schools
provide strongly curricula aligned with state content standards and supported
by newly adopted text books. The middle schools promote a child-centered
academic environment featuring team concept, continued language arts emphasis,
and (supported by mentoring, programs) an accelerated math curriculum.
The high schools are developing a variety of career pathway programs developed
in conjunction with labor statistics, college majors, and student interest.
As you read the profiles for each school in the Indian River School District,
you will discover outstanding leaders, dedicated staff, and supportive
communities jointly striving to assist students in their journey toward
becoming well educated, successful individuals.
Mission:
The mission of IRHS endorsed by all staff in 1997 is to be a comprehensive,
safe high school that empowers all students to make the choices and meet
the challenges necessary in the 21st Century. Specifically, the school
will: (1) provide a safe, clean, well-maintained learning environment in
which students will develop positive attitudes and gain the knowledge and
the skills necessary to be successful learners and problem solvers in a
multicultural world; (2) broaden the scope of technical education by teaching
job attainment skills, business skills and life skills in order to prepare
the non-four year college student for the work force and/or technical school,
to assist students with entry- level job placement and to provide follow-up
services for one year after graduation; (3) help students acquire a mastery
of skills necessary for critical thinking and logical reasoning through
the effective use of research, numbers and symbols, and clear expression
of ideas through the required use of standard English, spoken and written,
across the curriculum; (4) establish high academic expectations by setting
forth hi-h standards and requiring all students to achieve those standards;
(5) counsel and schedule students effectively to ensure certification for
Graduation and to ensure sound course selections which will benefit them
for their future education or job; (6) enable students to develop physical
fitness through vigorous activity and t develop self-confidence.
Goal:
1. Increase our school's overall test score by insuring that all staff
are following the new state content standards. 2. Establish better Parent-Student-Teacher
relationships that will help decrease the dropout rate and increase the
number of students who graduate in four years. 3. Develop a school-wide
program with the help of the local police that will motivate students to
invest in a SAFE AND FUNCTIONAL ENVIRONMENT. 4. Use staff development to
implement a staff team concept in our building, which emphasizes shared
decision making. 5. Develop a "Saturday School" program for those students
who are disruptive in the daily operation of our school. 6. Develop a school
technology team to oversee the implementation of state and district Guidelines.
7. Instill in our students the attitude to enjoy the process of education
and to acquire the skills necessary for a lifetime of continuous learning
and adaptation to change.
