Chapter 4

"Justin," Chasity complained as she opened his closed. "You have too many sneakers. There's no way I'll be able to fit my shoes in here."

"Just throw them on top of mine. I don't mind." Justin called from the bathroom, where he was brushing his teeth.

"Whatever...." Chasity muttered as she threw her shoes in his closet. "I don't know why you're brushing your teeth again," she called to Justin. "I'm sure they got clean enough after you brushed them for the fifth time in a row."

"I have to make sure my breath is minty fresh for my date tonight," he replied.

"Oh, yeah. You've got a date with Ms. Blonde Bimbo," Chasity said sarcastically. She was upset that Justin was going on a date with such an airhead. She thought he had more class then that. The girl had practically thrown herself on Justin during the interview for some magazine. And her hair wasn't the only fake thing on her body.....if you know what I mean.

"Awww, are you jealous?" Justin asked as he came back into his room. He kinda liked the idea that Chasity was jealous that he had a date.

"You wish," she replied in disgust. "It's just that you could do so much better than that bimbo."

"Well, it's sweet of you care. I have to go now, though, or I'll be late. Don't wait up for me," Justin said as he brushed his lips against her cheek in a friendly kiss. She was too stunned to reply and he smiled to himself as ge walked out the door. He loved surprising Chasity.

"Do you need some help?" Linzi asked, walking into the room.

"You're through already?!" Chasity exclaimed incredelously.

"Yeah, well JC helped me,"

"Figures," Chasity muttered, still upset about Justin's date. "Nobody wanted to help me."

"Justin would have, but he had a date with that girl he met today," Linzi replied, trying to make Chasity feel better.

"Ms. Bimbo, you mean?" Chasity asked crossly.

"Chasity Michelle Phillips! Don't tell me you're jealous!" Linzi exclaimed.

"Of course not!" Chasity retorted indignantly. "Justin is just a friend of mine that I'm concerned about."

"Are you sure that you don't want him to be more?"

"Yes, I'm sure," Chasity snapped. "Remember? I've given up on serious relationships. I'm not gonna let any guy hurt me like HE did," she said with tears in her eyes.

"Oh, Chas, I'm sorry," Linzi said softly as she hugged her best friend. "C'mon, let's finish unpacking your stuff and then I'll fix us two big banana splits. Okay?" she said brightly.

"Alright," Chasity snifled.

"That has got to have been the worst date I've ever had, Justin thought to himself as he climbed the stairs to his room. He'd only agreed to the date to try to get Chasity off his mind. He just couldn't stop thinking about her. He opened the door to his room gently, so he wouldn't wake up Chasity. As he was shuffling through his dresser he heard her sigh softly.

"Chasity? Are you still awake?" he asked into the darkness.

"Yeah," she whispered. "I couldn't sleep."

"Why not?" he asked as he made his way towards Chasity, who was lying in bed. The room was pitch black and he had to be careful so he wouldn't trip on anything.

"Oh, I was just thinking of someone," she replied sadly. "How'd your date go?" she asked, changing the subject. She didn't really want to hear about his date but she didn't want to elaborate on why she couldn't sleep, either.

"It was the absolute worst night of my life," Justin replied, smiling ruefully. "It started out good but went downhill as soon as I picked her up. I couldn't have a decent conversation with her cuz all she wanted to talk about was her new nose job. It was actually pretty amusing," he added, laughing.

"Sounds interesting," Chasity replied, scooting over on the bed so that Justin could sit down.

"Yeah, well the highlight of the evening was when she sang "......Baby, One More Time" to me. She can NOT carry a tune and it took all of my willpower not to tell her to shut up.

"Was she as bad as me?" Chasity teasingly asked. Even in the dark Justin could tell that she was smiling. He pictured her full, rosy lips and had this sudden urge to kiss her.

"You have a beautiful voice," he said, sincerely, as he tried to clear his mind of her kissable lips. "Especially for being untrained."

"Thanks," she said with a shy smile. She didn't think that her voice was that great, but she knew it wasn't bad either.

"You're welcome," Justin replied. "You know......I like it when a girl sings to me. It's nice to have the roles reversed and to be the one who's being sung to," he confessed.

"I'll keep that in mind," Chasity said with a sweet smile. Justin was such a wonderful, down-to-earth guy and she was glad that all the fame hadn't gone to his head. "It must be hard, though, being famous," she added thoughtfully. "You have practically no privacy and your personal life is always put on display. Plus you can never really be sure of the real intent of the guys and girls who want to be your friend. It seems like it can be a really lonely place."

"It is sometimes," Justin agreed, a little surprised at her sympathetic tone. He was even more surprised, though, by the understanding way in which she spoke. "Luckily, I have the guys."

"Oh, I know," Chasity replied. "That's so great. Friends should be an important part of everyone's life. I, for one, don't know what I'd do without Linzi. She's my best friends and has always been there for me."

"Yeah," Justin added. "There are two things in the world that ever person needs- love and friendship. I've got plenty of great friends so all I need now is love," he said, smiling shyly at Chasity.

"If you aske me, love is totally over-rated," she replied bitterly. "At least love in a boyfriend/girlfriend type relationship is."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because it's the truth. I've given up on relationships. All you get from them is heartache."

"You just haven't found the right guy, yet," Justin said, soothingly. Strangely enough, he found himself disappointed by Chasity's announcement. He didn't know why, though. It's not like he wanted them to be anything more than friends.....did he?

"Yeah, well he probably doesn't exist," she said, yawning. It was getting late and she was starting to feel tired. She snuggeld up against Justin and closed her eyes. They continued talking softly until they both finally drifted off to sleep, safe in each other's arms.

When Chasity woke up she was slightly surprised to find herself in Justin's arms. Then she remembered last night and a sweet, dreamy smile played on her lips. The night had been perfect; something straight out of a romance novel. But this isn't a romance, it's a friendship, she reminded herself, astounded at the bitter disappointment she felt.

She managed to untangle herself from Justin's snug embrace and got up quietly, so as to not wake him. She stared down at him tenderly for several seconds before finally leaving the room to take a shower. He looked so adorable, sleeping, and the desire to kiss him was overwhelming. She quickly turned on the water, hoping to clear Justin from her mind.

When Chasity finally emerged from the shower, about twenty minutes later, she felt refreshed and vibrant. She threw on a pair of blue jean cut-offs and a tank top before heading back to Justin's room. She and Linzi had planned a "girls day out" since the guys were going to be busy all day in the recording studio. Then, later that night, they were all going to meet up and go to the fair.

"Ummm, you smell good," Justin commented, sleepily, from the bed as Chasity bounced into the room. She was full of energy and couldn't wait to shop til she dropped with Linzi.

"Thanks," she replied brightly as she made her way to the closet to get her sandals. She slipped them on and started humming "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer, as she dabbed on some lipgloss.

"How can you be so happy this early in the morning?" Justin complained irritably.

"I don't know. I guess it's just because I'm so excited about spending the day with Linzi," she replied happily, her eyes sparkling.

"You see her everyday...isn't that enough?" Justin teased. Secretly, though, he wished she'd look at him like that; her blue eyes sparkling and an excited flush on her cheeks.

"Yeah, well, we don't get to spend that much quality time together," she explained with a smile. Not even realizing it, she started humming "Kiss Me" again. She had this far-off, dreamy look on her face that intrigued Justin.

"Will you shut up if I kiss you?" he asked with an impish glint in his eyes. Chasity's head snapped up and she looked at him with wide-eyed shock.

"Wha.....What?" she stammered, confused.

"Isn't that what you were humming? 'Kiss Me'." he asked, amused. "I thought that if I gave you what you wanted you'd finally shut up," he teased, a flirty smile on his lips.

"Oh, you're going to get me a kitten?" she asked innocently, still trying to recover from the shock of his earlier words. She wouldn't have normally been unnerved by what he'd said, since he was just teasing, but she actually had been thinking about kissing him; and that, in itself, confused her. Justin was bringing up emotions in her that she thought she'd never want to feel again.

"Would you like a kitten?" he asked curiously. When he saw the utter surprise registered on Chasity's face he laughed out loud. "I think that question caught you even more off guard then the first," he joked, his eyes twinkling. Justin's laugh was contagious and soon Chasity joined in.

"Shut up you guys," JC called crossly from his room. "I'm trying to sleep."

"Sor-ry," Chasity and Justin yelled together. They looked at each other, then immediately burst into laughter again.

"Shhh," Chasity said, trying to control her own giggling, as she covered Justin's mouth with her hand. "We're gonna wake up the whole household." Justin tried to respond, but since she was still covering his mouth it sounded like unintelligable mumbling.

"What's that? I can't understand you," Chasity taunted. Justin mumbled something else she couldn't understand, then started tickling her.

"No....Justin.....Stop!" she squealed breathlessly. He grabbed her hands and playfully pinned her down.

"Give up?" he asked, teasingly.

"You'd better give up, Chas," Lance commented as he was passing Justin's room. "Cuz I think JC will strangle you if you don't," he continued.

"Okay, okay....I give...Now get off of me!" she told Justin.

"I don't know. I kinda like it here," he said with a mischievous grin.

"Pleeeeze," she begged. "Linzi's gonna want us to leave soon. We want to get to the stores right when they open."

"Well, since you asked so nicely..." Justin replied getting off of Chasity.

"Thanks!" she said as she quickly kissed his cheek then sprinted out of the room. Justin just sat on his bed for a few minutes, dazed, before finally smiling to himself. Chasity is one extraordinary girl, he said aloud, to no one in particular.
