Music

One of the first times music is mentioned in the Bible the women of Israel are dancing, playing instruments and singing to greet Saul, the king of Israel. The lyrics of the song they sung told of how the number of slain in battle against the Philistines by David exceeded that of King Saul. Samuel I 18:7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

The lyrics of the song the women sung turned Saul's heart against David and he began to fear that his thrown was in danger to David (later we'll see he had reason to fear).

David formed a choir with musicians to celebrate the movement of the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD from the house of Obededom. Chronicles I 15:2 Then David said, None ought to carry the Ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever. Everyone involved with moving the Ark were appointed in a form of praise. Whether called upon to sing, play the trumpet, harp or some other instrument everyone was expected to complete their appointed task lifting up praises to the Lord. Chronicles I 15:16 And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy. Chronicles II 7:6...the Levites also with instruments of music of the LORD, which David THE KING had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.

A great many Christians believe that music should be used as a form of Praise unto God. Music that does not lift up the name of Jesus or offer praises to God is considered Worldly or Secular music. There is another school of Christian thought that believes that Jazz and instrumental music can be excluded from the secular music category especially when the song is an original and not an instrumental version of a known secular song. I have heard different opinions about why it is important to separate Christian or Godly music from worldly or secular music and I respect all opinions. However, as is the case most of the time I had to form my own opinion. I believe music is gift that should be used responsibly. Music can have a negative impact like that on Saul after hearing the Philistine women sing and a positive, inspirational impact like that on the Levites.

Below is an excerpt from L Boogie's song "Superstar" it gives a partial view of my opinion of music.

Superstar

by Lauryn Hill

Come on baby, light my fire
Everything you drop is so tired
Music is supposed to inspire
How come we ain't getting no higher?
Now tell me your philosophy
On exactly what an artist should be
Should they be someone with prosperity
And no concept of reality?
Now, who you know without any flaws
That lives above the spiritual laws
And does anything they feel just because
There's always someone there who'll applaud

...Music is supposed to inspire
How come we ain't getting no higher?
I know you think that you've got it all
And by making other people feel small
Makes you think you're unable to fall
And when you do, who you gonna call?
See, what you give is just what you get
I know it hasn't hit you yet
Now I don't mean to get you upset
But every cause has an effect

...Music is supposed to inspire
So, how come we ain't getting no higher

Play, listen and perform music responsibly. Music is a powerful tool. Have you ever heard something that was so pretty it made you cry or made the hairs on your neck to stand? Has some song irritated you so bad that you had to change the radio station or yelled at a neighbor to turn the volume of their music down? Music can make us sing, laugh, and cry. It can make us happy and angry. It inspires, provokes and soothes.

Parents, please know what your children are listening to and don't let them listen to anything that contradicts what you have told or taught them. You may have given valuable lessons several times that have been contradicted dozens of times in the music your child hears. Help your children be responsible by being responsible for them.
