SLAYER HISTORY

SLAYER WAS FORMED IN LA, BY KERRY KING (Guitarist and very big scary bloke, probably wrestles Tigers in his spare time) WHEN HE TEAMED UP WITH JEFF HANNEMAN (Guitarist). THEY LATER TEAMED UP WITH DAVE LOMBARDO (who's hell on the old skins). THE BAND WAS LATER COMPLETED BY TOM ARAYA (bassist and vocals, noted for his scream in 'Angel of Death'.).

SLAYER FIRST DONNED THE STAGE IN 1982, PERFORMING A BUNCH OF COVERS. THEY DIDN'T RECORD AN ALBUM UNTIL 1983, WHEN THEY BROUGHT OUT THEIR FIRST ALBUM 'SHOW NO MERCY'. BETWEEN THE KNOWLEDGEABLE IT WAS HAILED AS A MASTERPIECE.

THE NEXT ALBUM WAS 'HELL AWAITS' RECORDED IN 1985, THIS SHOWED A GREAT PROGRESSION FROM THE FIRST ALBUM. THIS LED TO MAJOR COMPANIES TAKING INTEREST IN THE BAND. RICK RUBIN (producer) GOT IN CONTACT WITH THE BAND AND SIGNED THEM.

THE THRASH ALBUM OF ALL TIME WAS RECORDED IN 1986. 'REIGN IN BLOOD' THIS WAS THE FASTEST, HEAVIEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED. THIS INFLUENCED MANY BANDS TO FOLLOW THIS STYLE OF PLAY, BUT SLAYER WERE NEVER BETTERED. THE WHOLE ALBUM WAS PLAYED AT BREAK-NECK SPEEDS. THE RELATIVE SLOW PART IN THE ALBUM ARE AS FAST AS METALLICA'S 'CREEPING DEATH' EASILY. BEFORE THE NEXT ALBUM SOME TENSION BROKE OUT IN THE BAND, WHICH RESULTED IN DAVE LEAVING THE BAND, BUT LATER REJOINING THE TOUR.

IN 1988 'SOUTH OF HEAVEN' WAS RELEASED, A SLOWER ALBUM THAN REIGN IN BLOOD, WHICH SAW AN INSTANT REJECTION BY DIE-HARD FANS. IT WAS MAINLY WRITTEN BY JEFF, AND NOT KERRY WHICH ACCOUNTED FOR THE SLOWER RIFFS, AS KERRY WAS THE SPEED DEMON.

'SEASONS IN THE ABYSS' WAS THE NEXT ALBUM FROM 1990, IT SHOWED A GOOD PROGRESSION FROM EARLIER MATERIAL. WITH NUMBERS OF CLASSIC SLAYER SONGS ON IT (DEAD SKINMASK, WAR ENSAMBLE) ,IT WAS WELL RECIEVED ALL AROUND. I THINK AN UNDER RATED SONG ON THE ALBUM IS 'SKELETONS OF SOCIETY' WHICH HAS REALLY GREAT LYRICS, AND IS A STUNNING SONG.

A LIVE ALBUM WAS IN ORDER TO CELEBRATE 10 YEARS OF BRUTAL MUSIC. THIS WAS A DOUBLE CD, WHICH WAS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF SLAYER'S UNCOMPRIMISING LIVE ACT. TAKING MOST OF THE SEASONS IN THE ABYSS ALBUM, THROWN IN ABOUT HALF OF REIGN IN BLOOD, A COUPLE OF OTHER CLASSICS AND ONE AMAZING ALBUM.

THE NEXT PROBLEM FACING THE BAND WAS FINDING A NEW DRUMMER. AS THEY KICKED DAVE OUT OF THE BAND, AND RECRUITED PAUL BOSTAPH.THEY PLAYED A FEW SHOWS WITH THE NEW LINE UP, INCLUDING DONNINGTON ’92, BUT THEY THEN VANISHED WITHOUT TRACE.

THEY THEN REAPPEARED IN’93 AND IN ’94 RELEASED THE ALBUM ‘DIVINE INTERVENTION’. THE ALBUM WAS MAINLY WRITTEN BY KERRY AND TOM, WHICH IS WHY IT IS SUCH A FAST ALBUM. WITH ITS SHARE OF CLASSICS ‘KILLING FIELDS’, ‘DITTOHEAD’ AND ‘DIVINE INTERVENTION’. WORTH NOTING IS THE SCARIFICATION BY A FAN ON THE INSIDE OF THE SLEEVE, WHICH SHOWS THE DEVOTED FANS THAT SLAYER HAVE. CAN YOU SEE SOMEONE CARVING ‘BRITNEY SPEARS’ IN THEIR ARM. IT GOT TO NUMBER 8 IN THE U.S. CHARTS, WHICH DEMONSTRATED THAT SLAYER WERE STILL A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. SLAYER THEN TOURED WITH ‘MACHINE HEAD’ SUPPORTING.

’95 SLAYER TOURED AGAIN WITH ‘MACHINE HEAD’ AND ‘BIOHAZARD’. SLAYER PLAYED THE DONNNINGTON ’95 BILL , PUT TOGETHER BY ‘METALLICA’. RUMOURS THEN BEGAN THAT SLAYER WERE GOING TO RELEASE AN ALBUM OF PUNK COVERS. ‘UNDISPUTED ATTITUDE’ WAS OUT IN ’96 AND WAS PUNK COVERS AND SEVERAL NEW SONGS. BUT AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE ALBUM PAUL QUIT THE BAND SAYING HE WAS TIRED OF PLAYING METAL. SLAYER THEN RECRUITED JON DETTE OF ‘TESTAMENT’ TO FILL THE STOOL. SLAYER THEN CONTINUED TOURING, PLAYING FESTIVALS.

HOWEVER EARLY ’97 AGAIN SLAYER HAD DRUMMER PROBLEMS, AS JON COULDN’T GET ON WITH JEFF AND TOM SO HE HAD TO GO. SLAYER WERE AGAIN A MAN DOWN BUT PAUL AT A LOOSE END REJOINED THE BAND. WORK FOR THE NEXT ALBUM STARTED ON AND A SOUNDTRACK FOR ‘SPAWN’. THEY COLLABORATED WITH ‘ATARI TEENAGE RIOT’ , PUT BASICALLY THE SONGS CRAP, EXCEPT WHEN THE SLAYER RIFFS ARE PLAYED ON THERE OWN BUT I DON’T FEEL ‘ATARI TEENAGE RIOT’ HELPED THE SONG.

THEN AFTER A LONG WAIT NEW SLAYER MATERIAL IN THE FORM OF ‘DIABOLUS IN MUSICA’ RELEASED IN ’98. IT GOT RAVED REVIEWS FROM MAGAZINES SAYING IT WAS THEIR CLOSEST TO THEIR MASTER PIECE ‘REIGN IN BLOOD’. THE SOUND OF THE ALBUM IS FRESH, AND DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHER ALBUMS. THERE IS MORE EXPERIMENTATION ON THE ALBUM ESPECIALLY WITH THE VOCALS THAT HAVE NUMEROUS EFFECTS ON IN THE ALBUM. SLAYER THEN WENT ON TOUR WITH ‘SYSTEM OF A DOWN’ AND PLAYED SOME DATES WITH SEPULTURA.

WORD IS THAT SLAYER ARE CURRENTLY WRITING MATERIAL FOR A NEW ALBUM.
