Communication

How the giant panda communicates
The giant panda is normally alone (except in spring, the mating season), so it doesn't have to communicate much, but it does have ways of communicating.

Smell
One way is through smell. It uses its stump-like tail as a brush to mark its territory with 'scent' produced by scent glands located beneath the tail. Another panda can, by smelling this, find out whether the panda that was there was male or female, and when it was there. This is called scent marking, which is used by many animals. Pandas keep in touch by using scent marking all year long.

Noise
Communication is most important during spring when they have to find each other. Then they make a lot of noise, even though they are normally quite quiet. They yip, bark and even moo!
