Reflections for E-trail:

The trail was exciting and useful. The answer I had to find helped me learn more about the history of Singapore. Before this event, I had never thought of visiting the Singapore River for educational purposes but now I have a different perspective of its importance. I did not know the Singapore River was that long and exciting. The e-trail had brought me a step closer to its history and changed my attitude towards History. The e-trail was also an eye opener as there were many historical sites that I had heard of and seen in textbooks but not in real life e.g. the Tan Kim Seng Fountain and the Lim Bo Seng Memorial. Being able to engage in such an event is a real opportunity to learn more. I think that the Singapore River should remain this way, historical and yet vibrant, so that future generations can understand more about the past.

It was an exciting and thrilling race around the Singapore River. We ran around the Singapore River just to get the answers. It was really tough just to reach the destination. Along the River are pieces of historical facts of Singapore and some art works. There was a place where sculptures of fat people and paintings of fat animals and humans were placed. The artist imagined that everything in the world was fat but they were obscene because the humans were naked and that maked me felt disgusted. The Singapore River in fact was quite dirty to me. The Singapore River has improved greatly. There are modes of transport that are used now and in the past. For example the bum boats which are now use for sightseeing. Compared to the past, there are now many more restaurants along the river. I feel that more improvement will be made to the river's development.

Reflections for the trip to the National Archives of Singapore:

Although the journey to the National Archives was long, it was worth it as there was a lot of useful information available. I was able to do research easily as all the books and other materials were easily accessible. Through the research, I have learnt to write the references of books and magazines. I felt that the National Archives is very different from the library as it is more of a heritage site than a collection of books. Very precious photographs can be found there.

At the National Archives, there are plenty of historical books. The books are all about the places of Singapore in the olden days and people's activities along the River. Some of the pictures were the boring, but some were pretty interesting. We spent about 3 hours there looking through books and surfing the archive program at the National Archives. During the process of studying the pictures, the teachers wanted to photocopy the pictures and some facts. I went to the machine, but did not know how to operate it. I stared at the machine, hoping there would be instructions, but there was none. I went back to ask how to use it and they started laughing and thus making me feel embarrassed. It was quite a fun but tiring time there and I learnt many new pieces of historical facts about Singapore.

It was amazing to be at the National Archives as lots of information about the history of Singapore is just around me. National Archives is just the right place to be where you can learn more about the whole history of Singapore.

The titles of the book that we took information from had to be recorded down clearly and specifically so that we can observe the copyright laws. It was easy to quote the references as all the information was easily accessible. However, some information could not be obtained as it was either missing or not in place. As it was my first trip there, I was quite a little confused as to what to do, but I was still happy as I had obtained a reader's pass and am now considered to be a member of the National Archives.

The photocopy machine was the most difficult part of all as high hopes were resting on my shoulders because my teachers did not want me to suffer the same fate as Marvin. Fortunately, it was good having Dayani there as she became my so-called tutor in dealing with the photocopy machine. And finally, after much determination, I FINALLY got to use the photocopy machine properly.

The whole project has made me realise that hard work as well as cooperation brings success and success comes from us.

The information was shown on the website in the form of text as well as graphics. This enables the viewers who are viewing the website to understand the information better by relating it to the images. Hence, the layout of the website is important, in order to make it easy for the viewers to understand. We had also used a timeline to categorise the information for easy assessing.

The competition consists of lots of walking around the Singapore River. I will encourage more people to join competition of such nature as not only that we acquire knowledge through moving from one station to another, we also managed to do some exercise.

When obtaining information from books as well as websites, coding down of references is a very important thing as we need to protect the copyright of the book or the website. Without the references, the author of the book or the website have total right to sue as information is obtained without the knowing of him/her. By coding down of the references, we are actually acknowledging the authors' efforts.

Everybody wants to strive for making the whole project a success. Different duties were distributed to every member and the member had to be responsible in completing the task on time. Furthermore, we did not rely on just the internet and books for required information. We went to the National Archives for our research and also asked teachers for help in getting some old books and magazines. By doing so, we had gained more information and had greater depth in our research.

With the help of the books and pictures at the National Archives, getting information and pictures was easy as most of the books and photographs there were documented the growth of Singapore. The people working at the National Archives were very friendly and helpful as they helped us to find the albums where the pictures we needed were located.

I had learnt to use the iMovie, while engaging in this competition. The iMovie was something very foreign to me before this competition. I have seen my group members made use of Dreamweaver to do the basic website, Flash to do the animations and Lectora for the quiz section.

My responsibility in this competition was to do the research and write-ups on pictures and books that are related to the Singapore River. I have learnt that this competition is like the school assignments , where I have the responsibility to complete something on time.

While doing write-ups, there would always be editing and sometimes, more information was needed and I had to re-do them. But I did them diligently. There was an average of two sessions a week that my group will met up with the teachers to do discussions and planning in the art room where we will still attend although we had many other activities in school.
