Over
the years, many changes had taken place along the Singapore
River. The river witnessed the transition of Singapore from
a small fishing village surrounded by swamps and forests to
a cosmopolitan city surrounded by tall skyscrapers. The river's
physical appearance had undergone many changes and this section
will focus on how development along the river and its environs
had changed over the years.
From
the first Raffles' Town Plan to the latest Master Plan from
the URA, the river had always been a focal point in Singapore's
development. Imagine the river as a young boy when Raffles first
founded Singapore, wild and untamed. With the development of
the habour, the young ruddy boy grew up to be a robust young
man, kept busy by the magnitude of goods traveling up and down
the river. Now retired, the river resembles an old man, reminiscing
about the past days of glory, retelling his tales to all those
who are willing to listen.
