LEESIDE C 1 – 2 DILLONS CROSS 25.11.01 [league]

Dillons Cross were 2-1 winners over Leeside in a hard fought 3B battle. The constant pressure from the Cross' finally paid dividends when Stuart Crichton coolly dispatched his spot kick minutes before the break following a hand ball in the Leeside area. The home side drew level with 70 minutes on the clock moments after Brian Meany came agonizingly close to doubling Dillon's advantage when his shot came back off the home sides upright.  Stuart Kiely, who replaced his injured cousin Clive in the opening minutes, scored the eventual winner for the Northsiders with ten minutes remaining. Leeside bombarded the Dillon's goal in the closing stages and were denied almost certain goals by the brilliance of 'keeper Daniel Daunt and his defenders. Others to shine for Dillons were John Kiely, Niall Kelleher and Philip Kelly.

 

 


DILLONS CROSS 2 - 1 TOWER STREET ATH. 17.11.01 [Presidents Cup]

Dillons Cross were victors over Tower Street in this second round Presidents Cup tie. The visiting Tower Street took the lead in the opening minutes. Dillons regained parity after 40 minutes when captain John Kiely rifled the ball to the top of the Tower net after a pinball like scramble in front of the Southsiders goalmouth. A hard fought second half with both teams creating good chances finally saw a goal with five minutes on the clock when a Mark Riordan cross was met first time by Graham O Leary. Others to impress for the Cross' were Paul Marian and Steve Walsh with goalkeeper Daniel Daunt stringing together some fine saves.

DILLONS CROSS 5 - 2 YOUGHAL YARNS UTD. 13.10.01 [league]

In the Murphy's Stout Match of the Week Dillons Cross continued their 100% record in AUL 3B. Their top marksman Clive Kiely continued his run of goals with a nine-minute hat trick. Kiely's first came in the 22nd minute when the United keeper came off his line to close him down and he chipped in from 10 yards. He scored his second three minutes later when the outstanding Brian Meany placed a pin point cross onto Kiely's head at the back post. Kiely made it 3-0 minutes later before Meany himself got on the score sheet to leave it 4-0 to the home side at the break. Graham O Leary's volley made it 5-0 ten minutes into the second half before the visitors started to stretch the Cross and were rewarded on the hour mark when the Dillons' defense failed to clear from a corner. Youghal Yarns doubled their tally with minutes remaining but the league leaders ran out comfortable winners. Brian Meany had a Man of the Match performance for Dillons and was ably assisted by the three Kiely brothers, Philip Conlon and Steve Walsh.

 


DILLONS CROSS 4 - 1 BROOKELODGE UTD. 30.09.01 [league]

Dillons Cross continued their 100% record in 3B with a comprehensive win over Brooklodge. Mark Riordan put the league leaders ahead after 40 minutes following a goalmouth scramble. Shortly after the restart a long ball from Stuart Crichton found Clive Kiely in space a he dispatched a low drive to double the home sides lead. Kiely was on target again ten minutes later when he received a through ball from Steve Walsh and slotted past the advancing keeper. Brooklodge raised

their game in the closing quarter and were rewarded nine minutes from the end but the fight back was short lived as Dillon Cronin wrapped things up in the closing moments after good work on the right wing by Philip Conlon who teed up Graham O Leary to deliver a pin point cross. Others to impress for the Cross were John and Wesley Kiely and Paul Marian.

 

 


DILLONS CROSS 3 - 2 CARRIGTWOHILL UTD. 23.09.01 [Presidents Cup]

It was the trio of Kiely brothers that showed the way in Dillon's Cross' victory over Carrigtwohill in the Presidents Cup. Dillons lead a charmed life in the opening half hour as the absorbed constant pressure from the East Cork side. John Kiely broke the deadlock after 35 minutes when he met Mark Riordan's free kick to head his side into the lead. A positional switch between the other two Kiely brothers, Clive and Wesley, improved the City side’s options and Clive doubled their lead minutes later when his long ball from the half way line found its way to the Carrigtwohill net. Clive added his second and Dillon's third after 70 minutes when brother John's powerful header found him in space and his exquisite first time volley rifled into the away team's net from 20 yards. Carrigtwohill replied with two goals in the closing minutes after the Cross had rattled the woodwork on two occasions while the performances of Wesley Kiely and Gary Walsh helped their side to a well deserved win.

 


DOUGLAS HALL 0 - 1 DILLONS CROSS 15.09.01 [AOH Cup]

It was a game of two halves in windswept Douglas for the meeting of Douglas Hall and Dillons Cross in the AOH cup. With a strong gale at their back in the opening half the home side bombarded the Dillons goal relentlessly. The Cross' defense, with Steve Walsh and Stuart Crichton leading the way, held out and the Northsiders were unlucky not to take the lead in the 28th minute when Niall Kelleher's strike whistled over the Douglas goal. In the second half the third division

outfit used the conditions to their advantage and seemed certain to have taken the lead on sixty minutes but Graham O Leary's excellent 20 yard strike hit the crossbar. The introduction of Philip Conlon and Dillon Cronin gave the visitors fresh impetus and their efforts were rewarded with six minutes remaining when John Kiely rose highest to meet Mark Riordan's corner kick and head the 3B side into the third round. Dillons were helped by a man of the match display from

Wesley Kiely while David O Connell and Brian Meany also impressed.

 

 


DILLONS CROSS 2 - 0 LEESDIE C 08.09.01 [league]

Dillons Cross came out on top of a hardly fought battle against East Cork rivals Leeside in AUL 3B. Both defences soaked up huge pressure in the opening half that failed to produce a goal with the Leeside keeper making a string of excellent saves. In the seventieth minute a deep ball from Dillons’ Stuart Crichton was headed back into the box by Steve Walsh and John Kiely finished from close range with a powerful header to give the City side the lead. The game continued with end to end football before the Cross doubled their tally with ten minutes remaining when Paul Marian’s cross was met by Graham O Leary on the edge of the six yard box to give league leaders Dillons’ the three points. Midfielder Mark Riordan and Wesley Kiely were in sparkling form for the winners who also had notable performances from Brian Meany and Niall Kelleher.

 


DILLONS CROSS 7 - 1 HILL CELTIC B 02.09.01 [league]

Dillons Cross continued their excellent start to the season with a goal blitz against 3B rivals Hill Celtic. Clive Kiely scored in the opening stages and Graham O Leary had added a second within minutes. Defender Paul Marian scored with an excellent strike after Steve Walsh had delivered the perfect ball. Walsh himself scored Dillons' fourth with a header that went in from the crossbar and team captain Kiely added his second on the stroke of half-time after Hill Celtic had got one back from the spot. Hill Celtic fought throughout in the second half and held the City side at bay until the 70th minute when Kiely secured his hat trick after his striking partner Brian Meany played him though one on one with the 'keeper. Meany wrapped up Dillons account in the final minutes to seal an impressive victory. Others to impress were Albert Knowles and Wesley Kiely.

 


HIBERNIAN ‘B’ 1 - 5 DILLONS CROSS 26.08.01 [league]

Dillon’s Cross got their new season off to the best of starts against Hibernian B at Shanbally. With Hibernians reduced to 10 men mid way through the first half, the city side used their extra man to full advantage. Clive Kiely got Dillon’s first goal after a powerful run from his brother John after just 13 minutes. New signing Niall Kelleher added a second on the half hour mark before Hibernians reduced the deficit from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time. The home team could have levelled the game on two occasions but the Cross defence, with Gary Walsh prominent, held tight. Kiely was on the scoresheet again in the 65th minute when Mark Riordan and Brian Meany had done the hard work on the right wing.  Meany added another for Dillons with 15 minutes remaining and Dylan Cronin scored a fifth in the closing minutes to a cap a great performance.
