McGill has strong showing in Laval
By: Brant Carson The Redmen (aka Hostile Takeover Inc.) came into Laval on a two weekend winning streak after a first place finish in Sherbrooke at the Vert et Or Invitational as well as a win at our home meet over the likes of Western, Queens, Sherbrooke and Laval. The Martlets, who were also victorious in Sherbrooke, came second only to a strong Western squad at McGill. It is quite apparent, this year, that the introduction of a pole vault coach, two more jump coaches as well as a sprint coach and a long distance coach has not only taken some of the load off Dennis but has strengthened the program. Individual athletes have been able to get more event-specific, 1 on 1 time coaching time and this has been translating into meet victories and high team morale. In the women's 60m, Ria Bradshaw, currently ranked 15th CIS, destroyed the field by almost half a second in a solid sprint while Ashley Shumate won the sprint hurdles. In the 600m, hard work is paying off for Kathryn Wendling who ran a personal best time of 1:42.88, just edging out Julie Lalancette of l'Universite de Laval by a tenth of a second while Xcountry and Track All-Canadian Sarah Ali-Khan won the 1000m in a time of 2:54.09. On the men's side of things, hard working Sasha Geukjian had a successful first crack at the 60m dash running it in a time of 7.57, being edged out by teammate Brad Leonard who ran it in 7.56. Sasha is having a very strong season this year and has run personal bests in his past two 600m races. His hard work is definitely paying off. In the longer distances, Danny Lennox and Ryan Beaton ran personal bests in the 1000m finishing first and second respectively in times of 2:31.30 and 2:32. Danny's time was good enough to rank him in the top 15 in Canada. In the 1500m a good race was run by Greg Cambell, who ran a personal best time of 4:16 in the 1500m and placed 5th overall Finally, one of the more exciting things about Track this year has been that we have pole vaulters, due to some generous alumni donations that enabled us to purchase poles. At the meet, TK Woo and Jared Steingard who are both new to pole vaulting, were able to clear heights of 3.35m and 2.90m. Congratulations! TK also won the long jump with a jump of 6.16m while Saad Chahine finished second in the shot put with a personal best throw of 12.73m. The team is now heading off to race in Boston. |
