Boston University St. Valentine Invitational

Plagued with illnesses and injuries, McGill's Track and Field Team boarded the bus that was heading to Boston University's St. Valentine's Invitational Track Meet, aware of their underdog status and knowing fully well that the competition they were to face the following day would be fierce. But where the Canadian team lacked scholarships and full-rides, they were determined to make up in heart.

Perhaps it was the pressure of the underdog status. Perhaps it was the competitive atmosphere. Perhaps it was the nature of the fast, steeply banked track. But most likely it was the months of grueling training they had endured that helped twenty five of the team's athletes produce Person Best times.

One of the most inspiring performances of the day occurred in the third heat of the men's 3000 meter race. Brant Carson, running strong and leading the competition for a major proportion of the race, finished with a time of 8.44.74, shaving an incredible twelve seconds off of his previous Personal Best record.

Another notable performance came from Carly Moher in her 1000 meter race where she clocked a Personal Best, coming across the finish line at 2:59.21, just behind teammate Sarah Ali-Khan.

Many athletes stepped up to the start line to face distances they had never previously raced in an indoor track. The athletes who raced the 55m, 200m, 400m and 500m races combined their determination and training with the perfect amount of beginner's luck in order to produce performances that reflected the extensive hours of training that had led up to the meet.

If the results of the Boston University St. Valentine's Invitational meet are any indication of the potential of McGill's Track and Field team, than the remainder of their season will prove to be full of endless possibilities.
