    Chapter Two
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Attack From Within
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    A loud knocking came from the door of Shinji’s apartment.

    Shinji looked up at the ceiling, knowing full well whom as at the door. He knew that his father had sent his agents to pick him up. That bastard. Didn't he realize how much it hurt him to have to pilot that Eva?

    "Shinji Ikari, The Third Child," A voice called from the door. Shinji lie still in bed, ignoring the NERV officers. "Open the door now!" The man called. Shinji stayed still, staring at the ceiling.

    Suddenly, Shinji sat up in bed, startled by the sound of splintering wood as a full clip was emptied into the door.

    Rei sat quietly in the pilot locker room, putting on her plug suit. Suddenly the speakers in the room came on.

    ”Rei," The commanders voice said over the intercom, "We may need you to pilot Evangelion Unit 01." He said calmly, yet sternly.

    "Shinji?" She inquired quietly in a monotone voice.

    "The Third Child has already refused to pilot Unit 01. He is coming here now, he may not be able to pilot once he arrives, and we may need to use you Rei." Gendo replied in a soft but forceful voice.

    "Yes Commander Ikari.” Rei replied quietly, standing and walking through the door to the cages where the Evas were kept.

    Wherever Shinji was, he knew two things. One, it was dark. And two, it was anything but NERV headquarters.

    "Shinji Ikari," A voice called from darkness, "Third child of the Dead Sea Scrolls, designated pilot of Evangelion Unit 01, and son of the charlatan Gendo Ikari."

    'Y-yes?" Shinji replied anxiously, his eyes struggling to adjust to the infinite darkness surrounding him. He looked down and he could barely see his own hand.

    "Third Child," another voice called, "We have an important mission for you and your Evangelion Unit 01."

    "N-no, I won't do it, not in that, I can't, I won't. I can't get into that, tha-" he stopped mid word as he was overwhelmed by a rush of memories and emotions from the past. He stopped a moment and looked out into the darkness. "Who are you?"

    After a long, uncomfortable silence, a bright light shined down on Shinji. The light was so bright it nearly blinded him. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he looked around and saw twelve numbered panels. "We are SEELE, and that is all you need to know for the time being. Don't be a fool like your father and oppose us, or it will lead to your downfall, as it has lead to his.

    Shinji sat for a second, his eyes fixed on the dark tile numbered '01,' the tile that apparently was speaking to him. He gazed for a moment, and his face went rigid, like that of a mature man. "Any who would act against my father can understand me, I think. Maybe I'll listen to you a little longer..."

    * * * * *

    "What!" Misato screamed into her phone, making half of the already weary control officers jump. "Did you go to the right apartment? - And was the door broken down? Well look for him damn it, we have a situation here!" she screamed into the phone, slamming the phone down.

    "Dummy System prepared for Unit 02," Maya called out, typing frantically at her keyboard, Ritsuko looking over her shoulder. "We are coming to the last pathway... and..."

    Suddenly the screens in the center flashed red, showing the failure to activate Unit 02. "Damn it..." Major Katsuragi yelled out, then thinking quickly, "Reconfigure Unit 01 for Rei!“

    “Major, Unit 01 won’t sync with Rei, we know that. This is useless!” Dr. Akagi replied.

    ”Yeah? Well it’s the only chance we’ve got Doctor, so begin now!” Major Katsuragi commanded.

    "No!" a voice called out from the hallway. Loud, running footsteps echoed into the control center as Shinji Ikari, the Third Child and designated pilot of Eva Unit 01 emerged from the tunnel.

    However, this was not the Shinji that everyone had known. Sure, physically he was the same boy that had cried over the phone that he'd never pilot an Eva again. Mentally however, there was something different about him. He was confident, strong willed, and more than willing to pilot Unit 01, everything that the 'old' Shinji was not.

    "Shinji, how'd you get... what happened... I mean..." Misato tried to find words, but they would not come. This was the last thing she was expecting. But now was not the time to ponder why Shinji was here, but to launch Eva Unit 01. "Shinji, prepare to Launch!"

    * * * * *

    Mother. Eva. Angels. Best. NERV. Unit 02. Mother. Death. Life. Doll. Mother. Me. Suicide. Darkness. Light. Shinji... Were these just words, or were they something else, something meaningful: something important.

    - - - -"What is it you want?" a voice called to Asuka.

    To be the best... I am the best!"

    - - - -"Then why are you here, in this place?"

    "I don't know where I am"

    - - - -"Why not find out?"

    "I... I can't."

    - - - -"Why not, are you weak?"

    "I am not weak!" Asuka screamed to the voice, "WHO ARE YOU?"

    - - - -"You know..."

    "No! You were weak... I counted on you, and you escaped, like a coward!" she screamed looking for something to hit, but all around her was darkness, "I DON'T NEED YOU! I DON'T NEED ANYBODY!"

    - - - -"No, you need the others. You know that, you always have."

    "NO!!! I AM ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU, DESIGNATED PILOT OF EVANGELION UNIT 02!!!" She screamed out, her anger, her frustration building."

    - - - -"What about that boy?"

    There was silence. For once, she was at a loss for words. She quickly regained her composure. "Ikari! That coward! He... he... he runs, he cannot fight! That baka, if he were here now I," She stopped a moment, pondering. “Well I don’t know what I’d do, but I tell you he’ll be sorry!”

    "Asuka?" Another voice called from the abyss. It sounded like Shinji

    "Shinji... is that you?" She responded, her voice quieter with surprise and perhaps a bit of gratitude.

    The figure of Shinji appeared in front of her with his back turned. She ran to him. She ran till her legs ached and her chest burned. However, the more she ran, the farther away he appeared. "Shinji!" She yelled out, pleadingly. He turned to her and smiled, his arms open. Just as she gained ground and reached him, his figure disappeared, and Asuka was alone once again.

    - - - -"What would you do child?"

    Asuka fell into a heap on the floor, wringing her hands. "I need no one..." she cried to herself. Then she looked up, pondering what just happened. Could she really be thinking what she thought she was thinking. That coward Shinji, it wasn’t possible that ‘she’ could need ‘him’. "Maybe one..." she said quietly, to herself.

    The sound of health monitors filled Asuka's room as she started to stir from her comatose state. She opened her eyes, and was nearly blinded by the intense light from the fluorescent bulbs. There had been darkness for so long. She said but one word. "Shinji"

    Author's Notes:

    Well, if you're reading this, one of two things has happened. Either A) You liked the First Chapter and wanted to read on or B) You were hoping for it to get better after the first chapter and gave me the benefit of the doubt in reading on. I hope that in either case, you liked this one as much as, if not more than the first.
    First, I'd like to give massive props to Alnilam and Soulfire for being sweet pre-readers/editors. And now for my notes on this particular chapter...

    Now, before I get the tag of taking the characters way OOC and rushing other elements of this story, just wait. Shinji's actions will be explained later, I promise... Really, I do!

    As for those confused by Asuka's mental hodge-podge I've presented here, just hold on. I swear to you there is another episode of this later in the series that is both better written and better in general.

    Anyways, that's it for now. See you later! Oh, and leave some feedback right over here!!!
