Amy got me thinking....

Amy was talking about the illegitimacy of taxes for welfare. Now, I know my blog isn't supposed to be a whole lot of analysis on anything, cause, well, i'm not as smart as y'all, but this i actually feel strongly about. Besides, I'm only going to expand on what I already wrote in her comments section.

I agree that unintended consequences suck. I agree that taxation sucks. Where I do not agree is where she says it is unjustified. Since there is a system set up and advocated by the government and sanctioned by the government that sets up actual barriers in the system that adversely affect one party, or economic status, over another. Its the "Useless tenth" argument made in a novel I read (to balance out DuBois' 'Talented Tenth') which says that since the workplace systems we have, be it because of location or circumstances, make some people chronically unemployed, then I believe it is the government's responsibility to do their best to make up for that gap. If personal coercion through taxation is ok for defense, then why not for making up for the structural problems within our society? Especially when those structural problems feed themselves into a cycle of poverty that individuals who have not even had the choice as to how to structure their lives are trapped in structural unemployment.

(And those are the people that I'm going to be teaching, amy - if someone can afford to pay the taxes to purchase them a lunch at school, then I say that's justified.)

I'll finish this when Eric stops being part of that untalented tenth :) he needs to apply for a job.

JAMES SURVIVIVED INS!!!!! Unfortunately then he got stuck, waiting for a red-eye at LAX....but at least he is making it - he should be on the plane now....yay Jamiehead!!!!!! Its neat :) And i'm just his roommate - imagine other people :)

Anyway....
Today has been a day of firsts. No, not bad firsts. Just weird firsts. And no, it does not involve hooking up with anyone, no matter what you might have hard from Jeremy (which is strange in and of itself).

I also so a correlation between my high school craziness and college. This is bad. I dont like this at all. If anyone remembers how I was my senior year in high school and then ending my freshman year february, you know how bad this will be.

I told eric when he (last year) started making schedules months in advance, and then we we made schedules months in advance that it would lead to bad things. because then when swt fell through, there was absolutely nothing that he could do about it. If I try to change it now, I'm a bad person to jenny and to aaron. Boooooo.

I'm not a good friend, I know this, but I just don't have the words to help her right now. she should know (and i hope she does) that i love her - and that she's going to be ok. No matter what. I keep having the strangest dreams. This one, Arthur and I were debating together at Columbia- but it was swat, cause of them posting the grids - it was just a bigger version of where GA is at Columbia and run by columbia people. but it was also set in Philly, cause my dad, sister, and lots of HS CYO alumni showed up. The funny thing about debate drems is that you can swtch partners in the middle and not be perturbed. But a couple important parts about the dream.
1) Eric was in it and he was wonderful. Because he is.
2) Arthur and I hit someone in quarters (don't know who), but quarters were held in my bedroom.
3) Chris was there, but wasnt watching our outrounds, but Amanda and Jess'. [who were still debating as glasgow]
So quarters happens (mind you, in Eric's and my bedroom, but a slightly grayer version of it colorwise), I thought we clearly won, and instead of announcing, we were pressing matt mcmillan to leak. Emily Garin and (i thought Gilbert, but I was corrected to point out that it was some novice who looked like lindsay richman) were in semis, danniler and kates, amanda and jess, and william and mary A. Now, this didn't bother dream-kate right away. After Arthur and a novice began giving a PMC in semis against amanda and jess, and the novice was singing the PMC, I realized that I had been debating with arthur this weekend, and no team we lost to in quarters (though I didnt remember who it was) was in semis, that instead, Arthur had substituted this guy in for me in order to get a qual without telling me. In that same vein, Amanda and Jess were tag teaming in this little girl to split the LOC, again to try to ge another kid qualled. I (justifiably) got a little upset, and went to go visit with friends of mine, where vicki and cheryl did my nails while joyce looked on. I left to go make donations of five-dollar coins to a shelter, and then came back, and was hugged by someone who looked like Tim Willenken, only more plain - much more plain - to the point that I had no idea who it was. He hugged me and said "congratulations! You've finally made it such that you're almost as good as me! We're tied at 31st speaker!" I was like, ok, but whatever :) since I had missed the awards ceremony, i decided to go check if i had a trophy to pick up. Evan told me that not only did i not have a trophy to pick up, but i didnt deserve one in the first place - arthur had already picked up "his" 4th place team, and that I had dropped unnoticed in quarters. I then went and talked to Dom for a little while, and Matty McMillan came up to me and told me I was a bad person, because "that guy" (dom) was in charge of speech competition in philly or new york. I laughed and said - Dom's not that - he's the guy who fixes things at my church - and then I woke up.

Dom does have a good job now - he's head counselor at Roman Catholic High School on Vine Street in Philly. As a testament to how great he is, he was hired without his masters completed :)

But now that I've said all that,i'm either going to clean or go back to bed. Yay break.

Ok, but a few reflections on other things...First, on Ryan. He's great. Listen to his radio show every Sunday from 12 to 2 at this. (Open it in winamp)

Second, I feel bad. I think she reads my page, and I want to communicate that i've been thinking for a little bit. I know she's very hurt and upset that people who she considered her friends were saying such bad things about her, about novices, and such. I'm purposefully being obscure, so if no one gets it, fine. I thought about this for a little while. She and I really never came into direct conflict except once, and I realize while I dislike some things that she does, I don't dislike her as a person. However, it would probably still come sounding hollow from me, so I decided not to personally say it to her, just passive-agressive blogging. :shrug:

Next, i'm tired and I had a dream that eric left me for Lindsay Hamilton. I know she's got prettier hair and eyes than I do, and her body is better, but still. :) She wasn't even a tiger. If she was a tiger, I could understand - you can't really turn down those claws. Grr, Annabelle! (confused? Check out Shit Foos! for an explaination.

Next, I really really want a car, and I really really want it to be stick-shift. They're cheaper, and driving Jessica's car all weekend was absolutely wonderful. Plus, then I could have a car.

I'm going to quote liberally from this article as I make fun of this.

Lindsey Earls remembers vividly the day in the fall of 1998 when a teacher called her and several other students out of choir class at Tecumseh High School in rural Oklahoma and told them it was time to take a drug test.
If its an extracurricular that's framed in a class, how is that legit? You're blocking someone from a class, not just a voluntary activity, based on this lesser assumption of privacy.
Earls was found drug-free, but she felt the experience was so unpleasant that she and her parents contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. Aided by ACLU lawyers, they launched a federal lawsuit in 1999, saying the Constitution prohibits the local school board's policy of requiring random drug testing of all students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities such as choir and Future Farmers of America.
Herein we find the meat of the argument - its not about choirs or classes or privacy - its about the ridiculous activity encouraging people to be farmers. Honestly, farmer's lives suck so much that they need drugs. Also, putting them on speed will allow them to get their jobs done much faster - then allowing them moe leisure time which is inherently good. This would also be good for South Asian farmers. Yay.
School officials in Tecumseh, supported by friend-of-the-court briefs from a wide array of anti-drug organizations, school boards and the Bush administration...
Two things, I dont like when the sitting administration files briefs in support of one side of a controversial case. Seperation of powers, etc. I dont care if he supports it or is supposed to. Second, is the American public really so dumb that we can't handle amicus curiae briefs? Friend of the court?? Christ :)
But opponents of the policy, including not only the ACLU, but also such groups as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the libertarian Cato Institute, which have filed friend-of-the-court briefs on Earls's behalf, say that students in choir and the like are already drug-free, and that, if anything, the prospect of a drug test actually might drive some students away from supervised after-school activities that help them resist drugs.
"The single best way to prevent drug use is to get students into choir and band and the rest," said Graham A. Boyd, the ACLU-affiliated attorney who will argue Earls's case before the court. "The last thing you want to do is set up barriers to that."
Yup.
At the heart of the legal issues in the case is a 1995 Supreme Court ruling that authorized public high schools to require student-athletes to take random drug tests as a condition of playing on teams.
The court reasoned that there was substantial evidence of a major drug problem in the school in question -- to which football players and others were contributing heavily. Also, the court held that athletes have less expectation of privacy because they already consent to disrobing in locker rooms and showering together.
As a result, the court held, there could be an exception to the usual constitutional requirement for a search warrant.
Because they shower together!! That's retarded! Why is that a requirement?? Cause I know its not! What about gym classes? That's entirely retarded, and its too bad I didnt know this until now. Well, I never liked the ruling, i justy didnt know it was that dumb.
Tecumseh school authorities point to the fact that students who participate in extracurricular activities also voluntarily surrender much of their privacy, for instance, when they travel to out-of-town singing competitions and must sleep in crowded dormitory rooms.
Like APDA debaters? Like fucking college students? This continues to be retarded-why cant other people see it that way too.
The school authorities argue in their brief that even Future Farmers of America could be put at risk by drugs if the students use them during animal shows where they have to keep control over animals weighing hundreds of pounds.
First off, those animals are cows - kinda docile. Second - whatever brightens their horribly boring lives.
School authorities note that police are never notified of positive test results.
Yup, I buy that. Just like in the South Carolina hospitals.
"When the court signs off on a form of drug-testing, it plants a seed in school boards that might have not otherwise considered it," said Boyd, the ACLU-affiliated lawyer.

Its idealistic, but mainly, its also 100% true. Christian got mad at my appeals to authority. Enough emotional upheaval.

Jesus christ - Emily (Garin) this isn't positive cheap therapy, it only brings up bigger issues. I missed my therapy session today, so no venting until next week. I need tp vent, i need to cry - i was going to cry today, its not fair that i forgot about it. What kind of therapist office are they if they dont even bother to call if you're not showing up to an appointment after 15 minutes. Especially since i have a history of forgetting and breaking appointments - obviously im a trouble patient. I want to cry i want to get it out, i wasnt feeling this when i started typing. However, I think the ease and the intertia that is inherent in sitting before a computer actually stifles advocacy. John says two interesting things on the webpage - first, that we should have more interesting lives to detail on here. That's true, but honestly, if you want more interesting things, go read the newspaper. Second, he talks about not being out in college. I'm glad John came out, because i know when i was in high school I was real nervous about if people knew or not. I didn't want people to know because i didn't want them talking about me. I was much more open with the fact that I "do not discriminate on the basis of sex" in college, and there is one person-who-shall-remain-nameless-and-hated-by-all who did talk about me behind my back and how Eric shouldn't trust me, because I'm bisexual. I almost ran back into the closet, I cried and cried and cried. Its one thing to not be accepted to your face. But when someone attacks you behind your back and then feigns friendliness, then we have problems. But I decided to say screw it, its who I am, and now I objectify blondes because they're not my type. Definitely the cute little brunette type - and Liss dyed her hair ;). But Arthur and I had talked about regging as "Objectification A" this weekend. But yay sexuality! Just don't talk about me behind my back, or else I'll either a) cry or b) castrate you, depending on my mood.

Holy Christ almighty, my mood swings in between blog posts.

I was reading my mistyping, saying i wanted to go back to 'being' (instead of doing) nothing. I realise i meant it. Life is so much easier when one is just a blob of nothing. You don't have to feel, you can just either suck it all up and in and you dont have to put anything out for the world. If I was nothing I wouldnt want to cry.

Or maybe being nothing makes you want to cry. I think that is part of it too - I hate feeling like absolutely nothing, going nowhere. I need to keep remembering that I'm going to actaully do something with my life. Not only am I going to do something with my life, I'm going to do what I love for the rest of my life. I just need to get through the next year or so, and then I can start working with kids. Whoever said these were the best years of your life were dead wrong. I'm caught between, I'm poor, I don't have any worklable way of working things out. The only good thing about it is free psychiatric care. That's all.

Hey everyone - you were going to get an exhausted Saturday evening post, but Emily is on her way over for the morning recap and Arthur needs to call me with his own morning recap, and yeah.

Haverford was wonderful - yay Jeremy for running a great tournament, making a bad decision, but its ok, we forgive you. yay Rob and Phil for qualling - its not just the novices anymore. yay Jeff and Matty for not being upset with me. yay Kat and Mike for breaking. YAY ERIN AND CARISSA!!!!! yay Carissa for like what, 4th speaker? yay Erin for the two weeks in a row club. yyay Christian for also joining that club, and being like 8th speaker... yay Kevina nd Lindsay (not our lindsay) yay Arthur for being the greatest person ever, holding me together, and all that jazz. He really was amazing - Emily called him the more sincere and caring person ever and -- ding ding ding... and finally, yay to eric and danielle for winning the damn tournament. Tho the case we had for them in finals was sweet, yay to rob and Phil...and they won the tournament!!!! (yay to them not being on our side of the bracket..) cause they won the tournament!!!

Also, one more shoutout from last night - I want to thank arthur for being an absolutely wonderful friend. Especially because he's a (relatively, compared to some people) new friend as I just got to actually know him this year, he listens to my issues and mentally catches me when i fall - so this weekend should be good. I remember when Em told me he was one of the most considerate people she had ever met, and i didn't believe it at first. I thought he might be insincere (like a couple people that I won't name). But he actually isnt - and I give him a lot of shit (a whole lotta shit) so he derves a shoutout on here.

As does Ryan Daviduke ;) just cause I can.

So this morning so far:

woke up to fire alarm. for the second morning in a row they're hooking it up in the other half of the building, and it keeps going off - especially at 9am. This is why firedrills ought to be abolished - none of us take it seriously, and I'm a 'fire marshall.'
trying to get my comments to look the way i want. i think i've acheived that
gone and bought lots of orange juice from the "spot" shop. i like that i can use my meal allowance there, as i never use my 10m/wk as it is. Now the admin cafe (the only place anywhere near any of the liberal arts classes to eat, now that the pub closed) needs to accept meals too. Its the only place on campus that doesnt.

On tap for today...
1) ~~Read "There is a River." Whole thing.~~ Didn't finish, but gave it back.
2) Read and take notes on "Words of Fire." Whole thing
3) Go to the liberry and interlibraryloan words of fire assata winnie mandela and any others from that class. I'll skip

I come not to deliver a studied euology on our lamented Doctor Steward, but rather to pay a heartfelt tribute to one who was a very dear friend and a very close friend. Her passing was so sudden and unexpected that it is a shock to each one of us. It is one of the many instances that remind us of the uncertain tenure of human life. And he today we meet to pay a tribute to the memory of a great woman.

She was great in the estimation of those who knew her capacity, her ability, her real worth. She was not a spectacular woman. She was modest. She did not indulge in the modern methods of advertising those qualifications that fitted her so preeminently for public service.

A woman absolutely self-reliant, honest to herself and to her friends. She acted upon her own judgment and when she had made up her mind that a thing was right and ought to be done, SHE DID IT. She had the courage of her convictions; a faithful, reliant woman, honest in all his relations of life; loyal to her family, the public and her friends.

A great woman has departed from among us, great is intellect, great in heart, great in all things that make in better conditions in the world. She scorned to rise upon the shoulders of others. Rather would she put her own shoulder to the service of some less fortunate. She was one of those generous natures that love peace, order, and harmony.

But she could strike, and strike hard, in what she believed to be a righteous cause. With her it was justice on the one side, and injustice on the other. The line was sharply drawn. There was no middle ground of expediency or compromise.

Her success in life did not arise from accident. She was a student. She applied her mind with all the intensiveness of her nature.

She was a model housekeeper, and wisely ruled her household ever holding the admiration of her husband and family.

She was a musician of note, understanding that master of instruments, the pipe organ, and served as organist of the Bridge Street A. M. E. Church in Brooklyn 28 years, and in a Baptist Church of that city, two years.

She identified herself with every good movement in the communities in which she lived. Coming to Wilberforce as a stranger, she set about to cooperate, to build constructively. She despised the idea of rule or ruin.

We find her engaged in the following activities:

College Aid Society, of which she was president;

Mite Missionary Society, of which she was treasurer;

Young Women's Christian Association, member of the Advisory Committee;

Neighborhood Club, of which she was treasurer;

Stewardess Board of the church, a member;

Temperance Union, active member;

Red Cross Society, active member;

Negro Soldiers' War Relief League, active member, giving not only of her earthly substance, but the energy of her soul.

And now I come to speak of the strong bent in the character of this notable woman--Physician-Friend. Not even the ministry of the gospel bears such close relationship to a family or an individual as does the physician.

Graduating with honor from the New York Medical College and Hospital for Women and taking post-graduate work in the Long Island Medical College, and practicing continuously for 45 years, she was thoroughly equipped to stand beside the highest in this land; and when in after years the search light of history is thrown full upon her work, it will be shown that she was one of the great physicians of her generation. Her record at Wilerforce is phenomenal. When given complete control and left unhampered, Doctor Steward never lost a case. I very much doubt if any other physician in the county or state can show such low mortality record as can be produced by the case books of Doctor Steward during her splendid career of twenty-one years at Wilberforce. More still, during her long practice of forty-five years there has never been so much as a hint toward dishonorable practice aimed against this Mother in Israel.
Ah! In these twenty-one years, how she has stood by this community! And how happy we are, we who knew her worth, that stood by her!

We see her entering the darkened chamber and in sympathy go down in-to the valley of motherhood, rescue the young wife from her peril, and fan the flickering spark of babyhood into the bright and healthy flame of life. We see her, hopeful and confident, as she enters our halls and dormitories and brings to health and happiness the fever stricken boy or girl. We see her tear of sympathy and feel the pressure of that kindly hand as we stand by the bedside of father, mother, brother or sister, and see the life ebb away and hear her say: "God's will be done."

We cannot think of her as gone!

With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
She has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since she is there."

Wilberforce can never be the same without Doctor Steward. Many a fond mother will start out of her sleep at the midnight hour to hear the moan and stand helpless before her little one, and cry with the poet:

"O, for the touch of a vanished hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still!"

Doctor Steward often said that she had no patience with pain. She had relieved so many sufferers by her knowledge and skill that the Great Physician decreed that she should suffer no pain. So He laid His hand upon her and took her unto Himself.

We are not at this time reconciled or comforted. But if our grief be great, how much more so must be that of her beloved husband, her idolized son and daughter. How she loved to talk about them! They were her jewels.

Grieve not dear ones. Look away from the tomb to that land of fair delight. If Doctor Steward could speak she would say to us:

"When I am gone,
Above me raise no lofty stone
Perfect in human handicraft.
Say this of me and I shall be content,
That in the Master's work my life was spent.
Say not that I was either great or good,
But, Mary like, 'She hath done what she could'."
