America is symbolized here
as a tree that has been damaged
but is again healthy and strong.

On that day,
something on the order of 10,000
children lost a parent.

America, visibly wounded, is symbolized here as a once damaged tree, recovered and still standing strong against a peaceful sky.

The history of the United States is rich with examples of overcoming adversaries.

In God
We Trust

Pray for those lost on September 11, and pray for an end to violent use of terror to harm others, and of terrorist organizations, worldwide. Thus, God will bless you and America the strong.

September 11, 2001

Boston’s Logan Airport

At 9:59 a.m., the south tower of the World Trade Center collapses, plummeting into the streets below. A massive cloud of dust and debris forms and slowly drifts away from the building.

By 10:38, officials confirm that United Airlines Flight 93, en route to San Francisco from Newark, N.J., has crashed 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. None of the 45 people aboard believed to have survived.

Grieving Resolve

At 8:30 p.m., President Bush addresses the nation, saying "thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil."

The president said the U.S. government will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed the acts and those who harbor them.

The men who took over the planes that day were armed with box-cutter knives. Their leader has been identified by the FBI as Mohammad Atta, who had a United Arab Emirates passport and underwent flight training.

Atta's suitcase, found at Logan airport, contained a video on flying airliners, a fuel consumption calculator and a copy of the Koran.
