An island, temple or seafood lovers paradise, but also still a land of poverty, corruption & other various 'problems'!

They use local buddhist calender, which is 543 years ahead of western calender. i.e. current year is 2546 so remember that when checking out a thai ID card to guess at the persons age. However fake ID's abound - especially for lao/khmer/myanmar/etc immigrants so don't trust them too much except perhaps if they're of the the new credit card style ones!

Current understanding of Thai age of consent seems to be 18years when dealing with prostitution or 15/16y otherwise?. Prostitution is illegal altogether though! 18 is minimum age for working in a night entertainment spot, while 20 is minimum age for a customer in a night entertainment spot. This is Thailand!
