Today's ICQ Tip: Print a message If you receive a message that you'd like to print, click the More Functions button at the bottom left of the message, and choose Print from the pop-up menu. ICQ 2000 users must be in Single Message Mode for the More Functions button to appear. Click the Msg Mode button on any message to switch between modes. Today's ICQ Tip: Float the System menu You don't have to leave your ICQ window open to access the system menu. Just drag the System Notice tab from your contact list onto your desktop to have a tiny ICQ box floating on top of your open documents. In addition, you can make ICQ appear in the tool bar of any applications--just drag it there! You can access all items in your menu by clicking the floater, and it will indicate when someone tries to contact you. To make it go away, just click it and select Status "Floating" Off from the pop-up menu. Today's ICQ Tip: Get the mail It's long been said that you can never be too rich or too thin--or have too many free Web-based e-mail accounts. ICQ has jumped into the e-mail fray with its Web-based service, ICQmail. ICQmail gives you most of the basic features of other Web-based e-mail accounts such as Yahoo and Hotmail--a spelling checker, mailing lists, an address book, and so on. And it also integrates nicely with the ICQ client; for example, you can set ICQ to notify you with a flashing icon when you have mail. Sign up for your ICQmail account and get more details here. Today's ICQ Tip: Dress up your ICQ So you say ICQ isn't fancy enough for you? Now's your chance to truly customize ICQ. ICQ Plus is a free add-on that gives you the ability to design your own version of ICQ. To achieve this effect, the program uses skins--custom interfaces that change everything from your icons and background colors to your alert sounds. You can use the skins that come with ICQ Plus, trade skins with your ICQ buddies, or create your own. Today's ICQ Tip: Ads on ICQ? Noticed the advertisements that have suddenly started popping up in your message box? Don't be alarmed; you didn't change any settings by mistake. CNET has confirmed that AOL Time Warner's America Online (which owns ICQ) is testing ways display ads over ICQ. So while ICQ may still be free, it won't necessarily be ad-free. But if you've heard rumors about ICQ possibly charging a fee for the service, fear not--those are, indeed, just rumors. Today's ICQ Tip: Sound off about those banners Beginning last month, some ICQ members began noticing new banners that stretched across the lower portion of their message boxes (see our newsletter from last week titled, "Ads on ICQ?"). These banners, offering tips and tutorials for the service, link to ICQ Web pages. Some longtime ICQ members have begun expressing concern that their visual real estate is being taken over by corporate interests. When you're ready to send the message, click the More button at the bottom of the window, then click the Multiple Recipients button. Checkmark the people on your contact list to whom you want to send the message, and click the Send button. All the recipients you selected will receive your message. Note: The recipients of your group message will be able to tell that you sent it to multiple users, but they won't be able to see who else was on the recipient list. Today's ICQ Tip: Find other ICQ users who live near you You can use the ICQ White Pages feature to find contacts who live in a particular geographic location. Click the Services button and choose ICQ White Pages, followed by Search White Pages. This will allow you to find new ICQ friends based on criteria you specify, including age, interests, and location.
