Beer Review: Redhook ESB
The Redhook Brewery was started by a couple of guys in Seattle, Washington in 1981. As advertised on its website, this thick amber ale is copper in color, has a nice aftertaste, and has been brewed since 1987 in the tradition of English pub bitters. Redhook’s Extra Special Bitter (ESB) tastes more like a combination of both a lighter Bitter from England and a coppery flavored American microbrewery beer such as Anchor Steam, as opposed to just a solid bitter. Its refined rich and malty taste places it in a category above the Samuel Adams and Killian’s of the American market, but it falls short of the Dominion Ales and Sierra Nevada Pale Ales of the new world. Although I tried it in a bottle, it probably tastes better on draft (like a Dominion Ale); I think the bottlecap's metallic residue distracted me from enjoying this bitter better. This hearty beer should be enjoyed on a rare occasion. I would like to try their IPA and Nut Brown Ale at some point soon.
