Yeah, I know, for those of you who are hooked on; identify with; or are awed by Michael Tyson's bad boy image, Iron Mike really can't lose! When he does get beaten, there seems to be more excuses made for him by his fans (including many sports media announcers), than there were Al Queda members hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan!
During the fight in which Mike lost by KO to Evender Holyfield for example, I recall seeing William Shatner jump up from his seat with his mouth wide open in disbelief, after an uppercut from Evander bounced Mike on the seat of his pants. After Holy stopped Mike, the excuses rained in: Well, uh, Mike took Holyfield lightly, and didn't really train properly! Yeah that's it! That's the ticket!...Whew!
And, after Tyson's very first loss to Buster Douglas, the public swore up and down that Mike was too preoccupied with Robin Givens to train properly or to really fight his type of fight!
Well fans, since most of us don't know what the hell is going on in our own heads, let alone another guy's, let's settle down a bit and not put so much of an emotional investment into our sports heroes. OF COURSE, there are reasons for EVERY fighter's loss. When someone signs a contract for a fight however, they have to prepare, show up, and fight to win...period! Whoever tallies the W's or L's on a fighters record is not concerned with mitigating circumstances that might have preoccupied a fighter's thoughts prior to or during a fight. Wins and loses in fights are directly determined by what a fighter does in the ring. Great athletes rise above their surroundings in order to get the job done no matter what. If they lose, it's because the opponent they faced was better at the time.
So let's get real.
Mike Tyson is older, heavier, rich, and has consistantly demonstrated that he is less disciplined than he was in earlier years. He continues to carry significant punching power however, which he still delivers with exceptional hand speed.
On the other hand, Lennox Lewis' flexible chin has been dented with one good heavyweight shot twice before. As such, Tyson's goal will likely and simply be to reach that flexible jaw and KO Lewis as fast as possible.
Of late however, Mike has not shown the discipline that would allow him to control a fight in order to set a good fighter up for a KO. Of late, Mike's just been moving forward and banging sporadically.
Since Lewis usually starts slowly and cautiously, Iron Mike will likely just try to blitz him early, which has been his longstanding habit anyhow. If Lewis survives Mike's initial onslaught, and if Tyson does not run into a big punch from Lewis while trying to win fast, the fight will slow down and likely get boring for awhile.
Both Lewis and his trainer, Manny Steward, are smart guys. They recall Lewis' past two KO losses; and know they are facing a guy who is probably banking his last big chance on being able to catch Lewis with a third KO shot. In view of that, Lewis' mission is not to let the shorter Tyson get to him.
How does he do that? By hitting Tyson hard from long range and clinching Mike up tighter than the straight jacket used on Hannibal Lechter in Silence of the Lambs.
If Mike does not get frustrated and act like Mr. Hannibal, he'll likely get inside and score a little; get tied up a lot; and take plenty of big shots at long range until he can't take no more. Lewis by KO in the 10th round!
The only way that won't happen is if Lewis gets caught with a real missle at some point in the fight. Don't however, think that Lewis is going to crumble the first time the breeze from a Mike Tyson hook or cross passes his chin. Lewis is an experienced champion in a big fight, with a championsip caliber trainer/advisor in Manny Steward. Lewis will therefore be focused and alert; he'll refuse to hit the deck easily.
All that puts the onus on Mike. He's the one that's going to have to do things differently to win. Mike is the one that's going to have to show some defense, and/or fight hard in every round in order to stay upright long enough to score a KO or pound out a decision. It's been more than ten years however, since Mike has fought like that. Trying to get Mike to fight the way he did more than a decade ago is almost like trying to teach an old dog new tricks. He MIGHT flash some old Mike in the early going, but he likely won't be able to keep that up long enough to make a differnce.
Lewis by KO in ten!
Oh well, if I'm right, there are plenty of things here you can use to start making excuses: Mike was too old; overweight; rich; didn't care no more; blah blah blah blah.....
