SOME BASIC WEIGHT LOSS PRINCIPLES.
I) Unless rapid loss of weight is a medical necessity, weight reduction should be slow and steady, in order to reduce the possibility of weight relapse (weight regain), and the potential health risks associated with sudden, drastic decreases in fat intake and the rapid loss of body fat.
II) Gradual weight loss should involve the loss of 1-2 lbs per week, which can be achieved by creating a caloric deficit of 3500 to 7000 calories per week (1 pound of body fat equals 3500 calories).
This weekly caloric deficit can be met by creating a DAILY caloric deficit of 500-1000 calories a day. Ideally, the daily deficit should be obtained through a combination of dietary manipulations and exercise.
DIETARY MANIPULATIONS should involve:
A) The reduction of the intake of fat, particularly saturated fat, and refined, simple sugars. Fat intake can be reduced to about 20% of total calories, with saturated fat constituting 5%, and the remaining 15% consisting of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly the omega 3 fatty acids provided by cold water fish, certain nuts, oils and specialized nutritional supplements.
B) An increase in the intake of complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber, which should be obtained mainly from frequent, small meals spaced evenly throughout the day. DO NOT skip breakfast!
C) Nutritional supplementation of micronutrient vitamins and minerals, to ensure the intake of the critical cofactors that our bodies need to properly metabolize fats and carbohydrates, and prevent diet related diseases such as atherosclerosis and Type II diabetes, both of which are associated with excess weight. Fiber supplements may also be applied, to prevent overeating, decrease the amount of fat absorbed, and help lower elevated blood cholesterol levels.
IV) EXERCISE should include both aerobic and anaerobic, or high intensity activity. Aerobic exercise better improves cardiopulmonary (heart/lung) function and blood lipid profiles; whereas higher intensity activity better preserves and even increases metabolically active muscle tissue during weight reduction. Exercising before you eat (or 3-4 hours after a meal) helps with weight loss because your body will use stored energy, including body fat, to fuel activity, as opposed to newly obtained food energy from a freshly consumed meal.
V) PERMANENT weight loss can be achieved through permanent lifestyle changes that includes enjoyable, nutritionally complete, lower calorie, reduced fat meals; and regular physical activity of varying intensities.
