Love of Reading

As a child I was known as a bookworm. The books that "hooked" me were the Nancy Drew mysteries. I first began reading them when I was about 11 years old, and I read and re-read them. When I was finished, I re-read them again. I also read other "youth sleuth" books, for example, Cherry Ames and Dana Sisters books, but Nancy Drew remained my favorite. I stopped reading them many, many years ago, but I still love to read.

When I was in first grade, I had trouble learning to read. My teacher suspected that I had mental retardation, but my parents refused to believe her assessment. They had me examined by a doctor, who discovered that actually I was going blind. I underwent surgery, which was successful.

My life has been enriched by my ability to read. One of the ways I want to contribute to the community after I retire is to be a literacy volunteer.

"Book-love, I say again, lasts throughout life, it never flags or fails, but, like Beauty itself, is a joy forever."
Holbrook Jackson, The Anatomy of Bibliomana Vol.II

Resolve to edge in a little reading every day, if it is but a single sentence. If you gain fifteen minutes a day, it will make itself felt at the end of the year.
Horace Mann
