Vegeta first made his appearance in some episodes before the Saiyajin saga. He was preparing to go to Earth with Nappa after Raditz was killed. He and Nappa managed to kill quite a few of the Z warriors before Goku arrived.

Vegeta is one of the most wellknown main characters, showing up throughout almost the entire series. First appearing as a villian, he laters teams up with Goku in the Freiza saga in order to defeat Freiza. He is killed by Freiza but is eventually wished back with the DragonBalls. Upon being wished back, he finds Goku has reached Super Saiyajin. He is then wished over to Earth with the Namek Dragon Balls. He planned to fight Goku to settle the old score from the Saiyajin saga, but by the time Goku shows up on Earth again, they are faced with a new/old threat. Freiza is back. Then they are informed of horrible news:Hellish Androids will show up in three years, and Vegeta needs to train. Thus he is forced to train, and team up with Goku again to face off against the Androids, and, later, Cell. Then comes the Majin Buu stuff. Vegeta never does really get a chance to settle the score with Goku, and by the end of the Z series, he has lost most of his interest in fighting.

Vegeta reaches Super Saiyajin for the first time during the Android Saga. He was training alone out in space when a (i can't remember what it was) shower hit. In order to save his ship, he was forced to blast the rocks as they fell. He was doing great until a really big rock began falling towards his ship. After several unsuccessful attempts, he began to get even more frusterated than he was(he was mad earlier cause he couldn't go to SSJ). Then he suddenly didn't care anymore about going Super Saiyajin, all he wanted was to save his ship. And that's when it happened. Vegeta went Super Saiyajin. Later he reached Ultra Super Saiyajin while training in the Room of Spirit and Time with Trunks. (this is also known as Surpassing Super Saiyajin. it's in between SSJ and SSJ2.)
