What is a flood? A flood is a body of water that covers what is normally dry land. It can be caused by a large amount of rainfall or snowmelt in a short period of time, or it can be caused by the overflowing of rivers, lakes, or seas onto the land.

What kind of damage are floods responsible for? Floods can destroy property and take the topsoil away, leaving land barren. This natural disaster is also responsible for the greastest loss of life out of all the natural disasters. Floods, however, can be helpful. Take for example, the flooding of the Nile River in Egypt. This flooding brings nutrients to the soil, making it fertile.

What is a flash flood? A flash flood occurs when a large amount of rain causes a river or stream to overflow suddenly, without warning. These usually occur near mountains and cause a great deal of damage.

How can floods be controlled? Floods can be controlled by use of the dam and water channels. Dams allow for water to be stored and channels allow for the water to be quickly drained to the sea.
