Well Read?

Are you tired of people telling you what NOT to read?

I love reading the reviews in various witchy magazines and online as they give insight and lots of different views about the books, music, films, etc that may be of interest to me.
But let's not forget what reviews essentially are - the opinion of the reviewer.
You may agree with them. You may not. And that's half the fun of reading them!

At least reviewers have actually clapped eyes on the article they're writing about.

I lose count of the sheep I see on forums/etc bleating on about "Oh, I'd, like, NEVER read a book/website by X they're, like, sooo fluffy!" "All books by THAT publisher are useless" and so on.

Closer inspection of these comments - and the people behind them - usually leads to the fact that they have never actually tried reading any of the books/sites and therefore didn't have any personal experience of whether the information was any good or not. When asked why they made the statements, it was usually: "Oh, I saw it on another site, so it must be right."

Logic, where are you now?

I will just add that if you have read a book and hated it, this isn't directed at you. There's some in my collection that I keep simply as a 'look how bad that is' tool! Nor would I suggest going out and buying books you think you won't like just to say you've read them.
As usual, apply common sense!

But to those who quote other people's opinions as some kind of law, I'd say try looking for yourself.
And thinking for yourself thereafter.

Happy reading!
