Welcome To DragonTyme
DragonTyme is an rpg system of my own design. I started work on it way back in about 1991-2, after having played a few other systems and found them to be too unreal in the way characters progressed, the way combat was worked out, and any number of other little things. So after browsing through a number of other systems, I started work on my own. Combining the best features from a number of other games, and adding in new thoughts and ideas from myself and a few friends, I slowly built up a basic framework from which I believe any setting can utilise the same system.
Whereas every other system I've come across dictates that once your character has gained enough experience, you are able to increase any ability stats you see fit by dictated amounts, I wanted a system where your character only gets better in the skills and abilities that they use, just like in real life. It's not as if in reallife you can go out there and throw rocks at a tree for half an hour, then once you get good enough at that, you are suddenly able to perform a triple backflip. That kind of character progression is totally unrealistic.
I've tried to create a system where each skill a character gets gains experience for its use, and this experience directly effects your character's ability with that particular skill. I've also tried to make it so as the system itself isn't based around any one particular time period or setting. This was done in the hope that it would then allow this same basic system to be used for any setting at all that the players and GM's might think up. It also gives a link between settings, whereby a group could play a game where they are in modern day Russia, but then the same characters could be used in another game, where they suddenly find themselves in an ancient, aztec like society. Their skills and abilities would remain intact, but not all of them may be of use in this new setting.
That said, it would remiss of me to make this system without making at least one setting for it to be used in. So to that end, I am creating a fantasy setting for use with the system. This world, known as Trel, is populated by vast number of different races and creatures, all with their own histories, beliefs, and desires.
