How to receive BBC World

ANALOGUE SATELLITE

BBC World is available freely on the Hotbird Satellite at 15 degrees East. It is not encrypted and available for all who wish to see it. This is how many UK residents watch the channel.

Check this site for details.

CABLE TELEVISION

BBC World is available on many cable networks around the world. The case of whether it is freely available differs from each network but most carry the channel in their base package. You should check with your local operator to see if you can receive BBC World.

BBC World is now available in the Republic of Ireland via the cable company NTL. It is not, however, available in Northern Ireland as residents of the UK are not supposed to be able to get the channel.

BROADBAND INTERNET (300k LIVE FEED)

BBC World was, until April 2002, available on www.windowsmedia.com for all to see if they had broadband internet access. Unfortunately, they had to stop this service due to high running costs (and so many people wanting to watch the channel!) This was the same problem when the channel was available on Quicktime.

BBC World are, however, looking into the situation and trying to sort out a platform to broadcast the channel. Any information on this will be posted here.

56K MODEM USERS (100k LIVE FEED)

If you do want to watch BBC World and cannot access it, e.g. if you are a UK resident, you can click on this link and watch the channel (if you have ADSL or Broadband) or listen to it if you have a 56k modem through a Korean Feed.

Please note the link opens into a new window and not through an external Media Player. It is a feed based on the British Embassy's website for Korea and may feature adverts in the native language.

IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (VIA BBC NEWS 24)

BBC World is, technically, broadcast in the UK overnights. This is because from 0100-0500, BBC News 24 produces the news for its own channel and BBC World. This is from the BBC News 24 newsroom and features an half hour of international news.

It does, unfortunately, revert to its own channel at *30 past and, funnily enough, shows BBC World programmes such as HARDtalk, Asia Today and World Business Report.

From 0500-0600 however, BBC World takes over the feed and transmits The World Today from the World Newsroom on BBCs World, News 24 and BBC One.
