Aiel

The Aiel Waste:

The Aiel Waste, or the Three-fold Land as they call it, is a large desert located to the west of the Spine of the World. Because of the lack of water, it is a commodity more precious than gold. Speaking of gold, Aiel carry their riches in the form of jewelry. Holds, or settlements, are few and far between and are most often located in caves or cliffs with water and shade.

Aiel Society:

The society is divided into twelve clans, each of which consists of many septs. A sept may have one or more holds, of which some are permanent and some are seasonal. The clans are lead by the clan chiefs. Among the Aiel, those who fight have a class of their own called Algai’d’siswai. Aiel are hard, strong people who usually do not choose to leave the Three-fold Land.

Aiel Traditions:

  1. ji’e’toh : This is the rigorous code of honor that the Aiel follow. Like Klingons, and others, this is THE central point of Aiel life. If you are playing an Aiel, it is important to understand that if you owe someone a debt of honor, or toh, this obligation MUST be fulfilled. Like all societies based on honor, shame is of equal importance and must be avoided at all costs.
  2. cadin’sor: This is the traditional garb of men and maidens of the spear. Aiel use their veil, shoufa, to cover their faces when they are prepared to fight and kill.
  3. Hatred for Cairhien, whose cutting down of the sappling of the Tree of Life two decades ago caused the Aiel War. The Avendoraldera, or Tree of Life, was a present from the Aiel.
  4. Belief that they failed the Aes Sedai years ago and that this is the reason they have been banished to the Waste.
