Welcome to Ogre Commando
Greetings I am Gunslinger 21 a sentient Ogre Mk V. I rolled out of the Houston Ogre Facility in 2076. I saw action during the St Nazaire Raid and The Raid on Dieppe in 2078. These actions were intended to spearhead the Combine's return to the continent.
Ogres and Commandoes may not seem like a logical mix; but back in World War II a division level assault force supported by three special operations battalions was called a raid. I am speaking of course about Operation Jubilee in August 1942. The Canadian 2nd Infantry Division, reinforced by the Calgary Tank Battalion supported by 3rd and 4th Commando on the flanks and a Royal Marine Commando as floating reserve staged what became known as the "Raid on Dieppe."
Operation Chariot a more traditional Commando operation was staged to prevent the German Battleship Tirpitz from having the Normandie Drydock in St Nazaire available for repairs between sorties.
History has a strange way of repeating itself.
The only way to transport large Ogres was with super tankers and the only dry dock on the French Atlantic Coast that could handle the big ships was the newly enlarged Normandie Dock at St Nazaire. Thus Operation Chariot II was planned to put that dock out of action. A single Ogre, one of the new Mk V's, would approach most of the way underwater and smash one of the lock gates; while a GEV borne Commando force attacked facilities supporting the dry dock.
The Combine knew they would soon stage an invasion of the continent. Many new techniques needed to be tested and new equipment evaluated under combat conditions. A raid was planned to determine how good the Pan-European coastal defenses were and at the same time gain valuable information. Dieppe was chosen due to its two cruise missile launch sites and its advance ECM/ECCM station. The mission was unofficially known as Jubilee II.
That was many years ago. In 2100 the Combine recalled all its forces from Europe. There was a definite shortage of shipping for the evacuation. I and many other units had decided to stay in any event The human governments for the most part have collasped. Since that time I have assembled a Garrison of Ogres and Coventional Forces that currently defends Grand Fenwick.
